How much weight does baby gain in last weeks of pregnancy?

Hi

Just wondering if anyone had some advice on this. I am 37 +6 weeks. Went to see the mw today and from feeling my bump she estimates that the baby is currently about 7lb. She said that he will probably put on about 1lb a week until he is born - so even if he's born on time he could be 9lb!

Does anyone know how accurately mws can estimate birth weight at this stage and how much weight a baby is likely to put on in the last few weeks?

Many thanks!

They can't estimate it accurately at all. From feeling your bump she can estimate even less accurately than she would with a growth scan. I had a growth scan at 36 weeks because of a big bump - I was told by the consultant radiologist who did that that my baby was about 7.5. pounds at that time, so would probably be about 9.5 pounds at term, which is a pound every two weeks rather than every week.
The radiologist said they can be out by 10% with a growth scan but I have read in other (fairly authoritative sources) that they can in fact be out by as much as 40%. So far as feeling your tummy goes - they can' t possibly be accurate. No way of knowing without a scan how much fluid you have etc.

dont worry! i was told i was having big baby! also estimated at that sort of weight- and my dd was 6.5lb! was then told i was carring a big placenta!

i read that in last 3 weeks its 0.5 oz a day

Thanks for replies. I'm thinking it just can't be that accurate. I was not a big baby and neither was DH and my bump isn't that big (FH measurement is actually behind by 2 weeks!) so the MW must be having a guess . . .
