Can you buy gas & air?

I have had 2 vaginal births and the second time the MW denied me gas and air when I first asked because she did not want me to burn all my bridges quickly!? When I did eventually get it (after begging) I managed fine and did not have an epidural. I may/may not have another child but wonder if you can buy entonox+mouthpiece to use at home in the early stages of labour? Probably a stupid question and the answer is no but I don't think I could cope with no gas & air until the later stages.

you can buy the nitrous stuff online easily. I've bought it for festivals.

MoonUnitAlpha · 18/09/2010 21:33

Inhaling it out of the canester Shock God, some people are stupid - and it's always them that ruin it for the rest of us!

lal123 · 18/09/2010 21:33

They gave me some more when I was being stitched after DD1. After having DD2 the midwife told me that I had no tears, no grazes, nothing. I asked her "Does that mean no more gas and air???" Sad

ArseHolio · 18/09/2010 21:35

It's the same with everything isn't it. The dim witted minority ruin the fun for the rest of us :(

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 18/09/2010 21:36

Really Dueling? Do tell...

ArseHolio · 18/09/2010 21:37

Yes do tell ;)

I've still got a couple of the icing pump things Grin

MoonUnitAlpha · 18/09/2010 21:40

When did it become illegal? You used to be able to buy big boxes of the canesters for whipped cream dispensers.

ArseHolio · 18/09/2010 21:42

Umm 3 years ago maybe 2.

I think it's just illegal to sell it for recreational use. We used to sell it in clubs and had to stop.

£3 a balloon!

Loadsa money!

peppapighastakenovermylife · 18/09/2010 21:48

Oh I wish! Makes me consider having DC4 just to get my hands on it. Or perhaps training as a midwife Wink

MoonUnitAlpha · 18/09/2010 21:52

Ah, I see. I'm pretty sure I have bought "whipped cream chargers" from a catering shop within the last couple of years (before I got pregnant though!).

I loved the gas and air during labour!

lal123 · 18/09/2010 21:53

lol peppa - how DO they stop the mws having a quick puff when things are quiet??

scottishmummy · 18/09/2010 22:00

You used to be able to buy it on ebay. How legal that was I don't know.

When I was a student midwife my mentor insisted I ought to have a go on it in the treatment room one night shift (I hadn't been allowed it in labour either). We were soon both giggling away like a pair of hyenas, high as kites. One of the other midwives pointed out it was a sackable offence and we better stop it straight away. Never dared have another go. scottishmummy · 18/09/2010 22:07

hell can buy anything on ebay

DuelingFanjo · 18/09/2010 22:10

DuelingFanjo · 18/09/2010 22:11

direct link, though you ain't seem me right Wink

scottishmummy · 18/09/2010 22:11

here what?that wont sort your labour pain.nice cakes though

DuelingFanjo · 18/09/2010 22:12

sorry , see other link. You need a dispenser and some balloos though, might not feel like going through all that faff while in labour.

DuelingFanjo · 18/09/2010 22:13

but yeah, it isn't the same as the stuff you get in hospital.

scottishmummy · 18/09/2010 22:17

entonox has anaesthetic properties.balloon catering gas doesnt.

IsThatTheTime · 18/09/2010 22:17

bertiebotts they bring it to your house for a homebirth but they don't bring the mouthpiece so you can't have a cheeky toke in the run-up to labour. Probably a good job as my DH would probably have had it all before I had my first contraction...

bruxeur · 18/09/2010 22:24

You can fuck up your bone marrow quite spectacularly if you take too much of it. Dying of aplastic anaemia = not as cool as giggling.

Might be something to do with it...

BertieBotts · 19/09/2010 01:11

Oh, really? They never brought me any beforehand :( I was meaning once you are in established labour, but nowhere near transition, if you wanted it then, you could call out the midwife to get the gas and air at home, and then transfer in at the last minute Wink

islandbaby · 19/09/2010 06:09

scottishmummy what is etonox if it's not just nitrous oxide (50/50)? I mean, what extra anaesthetic properties does it have?

Those whipped cream canisters are oure nitrous oxide too, I assume at 50/50. They aren't 'balloon gas', that's entirely different. It's just that people started to put them in balloons and sell them as a legal high.

Oh what fun they used to be!
