Dressing for C section

Holymoly321 · 03/09/2005 17:48

I'm booked in for a C -section on the 15th and wondered what I should take with me in terms of clothing as I'll be in for a few days. I've bought 10 pairs of big granny knickers (lovely!) and treated myself to a gorgeous PJ set. But I'm wondering if I should get a nightie instead incase the PJ bottoms cut into me. I was going to take jogging bottoms in with me too so that I wasn't in PJ's all day everyday - is this sensible?

wouldnt go with elastic trouser, drawstring would be better.
scar is lower than your normal knicker line so your trs shouldnt cut into it

Magscat · 03/09/2005 17:50

You should be fine in anything so long as it doesn't rub on the bikini line - i.e. no small knickers or jeans so tight they dig in (as if!)

Good luck with it

Twiglett · 03/09/2005 17:51

the cut will be along the bikini line so anything on the waist is fine really

but really a nightie is probably best .. a cheap one you will be happy to throw away .. as you may get blood on it

personally I'd choose a couple of big nighties, that allow for breastfeeding (so buttons / ribbons down) and a dressing gown for the hospital stay and use your gorgeous pj set when you get home

HTH and good luck

blood not from scar but lochia

Also you don't lost the stomach instantly. A friend thought she would and took in pre-preganancy clothes!

Nightie would be better as you will have those surgical stockings on for a while so you may be too hot

NotQuiteCockney · 03/09/2005 17:55

Nighties are also better for people fiddling around with catheter/pads for you, when your bottom half is not working very well.

Hospitals are always too warm (in my experience), so something v thin and cotton probably best.

i took in pj's too! i wore just the top and my knickers in bed and the trousers when walking around the ward.

i got pj's that were seperates and looked a bit like jogging bottoms, vest top with buttons and a little cardi to wear instead of a dressing gown as post natal wards are always so hot.

as long as the pj bottoms aren't tight then they should be fine, just try and get some tops with buttons or vest top and cardi if you are planning on breastfeeding, for convenience. button tops just undo a few buttons and vest top and cardi, hoik you boob either above the vest top if loos or pull the vest top up and then you can use your cardi for a bit more modesty if you want to.

I wore a theatre top with a hospital gown for the first 24 hours (until the catheter was removed). Then I was in baggy tops with baggy bottoms (actually theatre scrubs)or shorts for the rest of the stay. When they got dirty I simply chucked them in the hospital laundry!

With tops and bottoms you're more inclined to get out of bed and move around. Make sure you're up and about the first evening and drink tons of fluid to get those bowels moving!

As it was summer - both times - elastic drawstring trousers and shorts, loose fitting t-shirts. Had button down nighties ( old granny ones I could ditch if needed) and cotton dressing gown.

Moomin · 04/09/2005 11:32

good tip I found to stop any irritation of scar - wear a sanitary towel in your knickers against the scar, and wear big maternity knickers to keep it snug. To be honest if you've got that going on, plus the enormous towel in the 'usual' place for the bleeding, the last thing you'll want to wear on top of all that is pj bottoms! I found a nightie much better and just wore a cotton dressing gown over it for around the ward.

Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 11:35

I didn't have ne prob with pjs cutting in, mine were elasticated. But agree with the others - you'll be way too hot in pjs. Maternity wards are kept like ovens for newborns.

anchovies · 04/09/2005 11:37

Agree with moomin about the sanitary towel trick.

I wore jersey pj that came with a nursing vest top and a wrap around cardi thing (like vickiyumyum) Was very hot so these were perfect, just put the cardi on to walk around.

Oh, I nicked some big pants from DH. Those clingy sorts of boxers with the wide high waistband. They worked very well, and were more modest than the usual pants. Oh, and the catheter line went nicely out of the hole in the front.
