ok, so i had my appointment today with consultant to arrange date for my c-section as im 33+2 with dc3

I have asked to go in at 38+6, one day earlier than the recommended guideline of 39 weeks.

My reason for this is that i have 2 ds's, 2+4, and if i go in on the friday i have both sets of grandparents who can have them for us while im in hospital over the weekend.
If i go in the following Monday i will have to ask them to take tme off work etc which wouldn't be ideal..although if it came to it could be arranged.

So the consultant made me feel like utter crap, saying that i am risking damage to baby's lungs, chance she will have to go in scbu etc...i did say to him im asking to have her 1 day earlier than 39 weeks not weeks earlier.

He went and asked the head consultant on duty who said yeah its no problem and signed off on it straight away Hmm

Should i be worried, i mean i could go into labour anytime really and then what?? I feel so Sad

God, one day isn't going to make any difference surely [disclaimer: not an obstetrician]

babybumpem · 13/09/2010 19:17

That was my thought, its not like im asking to have her now its literally a matter of hours before 39 weeks.

I've looked forward to todays appointment, feels like a big step closer to having her, but now i just feel a bit down

If you are worried you could ask to have it a week later, so 39+6. That way you would still have the weekend?

treedelivery · 13/09/2010 19:20

Are you sure that was a consultant? Not a junior who got their dates mixed up?

Either way - ignore and carry on Smile

OnlyWantsOne · 13/09/2010 19:22

People have their babies at 37 weeks onwards at home quite safely all the time.

Just a jobsworth - let it go :) be happy you know when you'll meet your new baby x

When it looked like I might have ds2 at 34 weeks, I simply had a steroid injection to help with lung development. I was told he might have to be tube fed, but they didn't mention anything about problems with the lungs. Sounds like your consultant didn't want someone other than himself making decisions! Take no notice. Sure it will all be fine. DS was finally born at 39 weeks (so about when you would be having your cs, and was completely fine in every way.

warthog · 13/09/2010 19:24

yeah he was crap.

but maybe he's just stressed at trying to accommodate everyone and yours was the straw - camel's back.

everyone's stressed. give him a break and don't think anymore of it.

babybumpem · 13/09/2010 19:33

treedelivery- He may have been but im sure he said he was a consultant

Thanks everyone though i feel a bit better now Smile

Consultants do say these things for a reason though, ds was an elcs at 39 weeks, but his lungs were immature, and he spent a week in scbu. I know that for most babies an elcs is safe, but they have to warn you of risks.

treedelivery · 13/09/2010 19:52

Normally a consultant wouldn't have to clear with anyone - unless say you were very high risk and they wanted the opinion of anaesthetics of haematology or something. I'm guessing he maybe said he worked for the consultant or something.

Anyhow - you got the date you wantrd and that is cool. Some section babies do go to scbu as they can have soggy lungs and get cold and all the rest of it. I think though that a day isn't a huge huge mahoosive amount in the scheme of things - that said you were lucky to get it. Lots of consultants will not absolutely never ever say yes to pre 39 weeks, except for diabetics etc.

Good luck, and congratu;ations.

What a horrible person to make you feel bad for asking for baby to come a whole 24 hours before 39 weeks. As has already been mentioned, 37 weeks is full term.

Given I assume he doesn't know your exact date of ovulation/conception(!) then the due date is only a best guess anyway. 24 hours simply does not matter. Sorry he made you feel down, forget about him and just concentrate on you and your baby.

sophieandbelly · 14/09/2010 08:09

that is utter crap dont listen! iam having my baby at 38+3 the consultant booked it in and told me the date. sounds as tho urs was having bad day.

good luck and relax and look forward to u liilte one, god do people not no after all this time dont mess with the hormones!!!

DoNotFeedMeBiscuits · 14/09/2010 08:15

what treedelivery said - sounds like he was a junior if he had to go and check with soemone else - consultants don't do this!

Threelittleducks · 14/09/2010 09:13

Don't worry about him - maybe it was running into his golf time or something Wink

Congrats on your date :) Relax and enjoy!!xxx

treedelivery · 14/09/2010 09:54

Good advice here, hope you are feeling better about it all.
37 weeks is term, but section babies don't get the squeeze, so 39 weeks os considered a good balance between maturity and the chance of labouring and needing unscheduled sections, hth Smile

witch6 · 16/09/2010 10:00

I think the doctor you saw was referring to a study that came out that showed a significant improval in outcome for babies born at 39 weeks + by ELCS, rather than at 38 weeks (lesss need for SCBU, less long term lung problems).
This is why it has now become routine for elective sections to be done at 39+ weeks rather than the 38 weeks that it was done at perviously.
I do agree though- one day is hardly going to make a difference(!)
