i'm 7ish weeks pg with dc2. i'm starting to wonder how it all works this time as i know i'll have to see a consultant at some point because ds was emcs due to 'failure to progress' and OP position.
when do you see one?
what do they do/ say?
do you get more mw appointments as last pg was not 'normal'?

i've got my first mw appointment next week so i know i'll get answers then but starting to feel stressy as it took me a LONG time to get over my experience last time.

When I saw the midwife at my booking in apt (around 8 weeks IIRC) she made an apt for me to see the consultant at 22 weeks and we sorted out a planned cs for that pregnancy.

I didn't get any more midwife appointments as I was healthy and my first pregnancy had gone well.

Did you have a birth de-brief after your first em cs so you know how it all unfolded? I found it very useful.

I doubt you'd get more m/w appts. Where I am you'd see a consultant at about 36 weeks to discuss birth options. They'll ask what your thoughts are, run through the risks of having another section vs the small risk of a uterine rupture in a vaginal birth. They'll also explain the local protocol for induction with previous lscs if you need induction, some hospitals will give prostine gel, some won't. Some will just book you in for a rpt section if you go term plus 10. Other hospitals would rather use the drip than the gel.

i am NOT doing a vbac.
end of.
i'm worried they will try and make me do one. which is why i want to see a consultant asap so i can get it sorted and stop thinking about it.

i did have a de-brief but found it useless for me. i wanted to know why it had gone wrong so i could prevent it next time. the mw's answers were 'these things just happen' and 'there's no way of knowing if it'll happen again'. not what i wanted to hear and didn't make me feel better as i'd done everything by the book.

it's making me tense already just thinking about it. :(

Mrsflux: if the last pg (as opposed to delivery) was not normal, then you may well have more mw appts or doctors' supervision. It all depends on what the pg issues were, whether they are likely to arise again and when, and what sort of management they require during the pg.

mrsflux You need to stand firm and tell them that you want a planned cs, and to get it confirmed sooner rather than later. For want of a better phrase, you just have to use some 'pester power' and not let up until they sort it out.

I was in a slightly different position as I was told by the midwife in my birth de-brief that I shouldn't attempt a natural birth again (my cervis is damaged after treatment following dodgy smear tests) so I knew the consultant would be itching to do a planned cs.

i suppose my pg was 'normal' - nothing to report out of the ordinary.
it was just the delivery part that went wrong.

OP position wasn't helped apparently by ds being big. i'm 5 foot 2 size 10. measured normal all through pg. he popped out at 8lb 10. no one - not even the people in the delivery theatre were expecting such a big boy. (he kept that weight btw and is still tall!) de-brief mw did mention something about extra scans if i wanted i think

i think i just want to get it sorted so i don't ned to worry about ifs and buts

I saw my consultant at 16 weeks and he agreed then to do another section but I think he realised there was no point trying to persuade VBAC as first ELCS was by choice. Felt much better to have it all agreed and mw boked my date when I was 29 weeks to give me time to sort childcare for DS.

Mumcah · 12/09/2010 21:30

At my hospital (King's,London) I didn't even see a consultant. The midwife just asked me if I wanted to try for a Vbac or have an ELCS and that was it.
