Induction, how long do they try for before deciding on a section?

Friend going for induction this week , I was wondering & didn't want to worry her!

She is going in at 41+ 5 and it's her first baby.

With me it was twelve hours which amazingly coincided with a shift changeover for the surgical staff Hmm

Unless the baby's condition deteriorates she does not have to agree to either induction nor section anyway.

starlight i'm booked in for an induction this week and i'll be 41+5. And no, I don't want to go but it seems its 'policy' to not leave us any longer

hi nymphadora if you're my friend, in fact, hello anyway even if its a coincidence!

Don't think so tweakers! She seems quite keen. Baby has been engaged for ages & big according to scans.

I'm hoping its not going to get that far and that she'll arrive before Friday. If she doesn't, I'll deal with it when it happens but I'm v concerned re placenta failing or that by refusing an induction, I then cause problems for my baby. I know i can go for daily monitoring as an alternative but that's not practical given that I can't get to the hospital on my own with my older DC

so, as far as i see it, my options are to refuse induction and live with tremendous guilt if my baby is ill (or worse) or, go with policy and have induction on fri

but as i said, i'm hoping she'll make an appearance before fri!

sorry for hijack OP!

tweakers · 05/09/2010 19:56

nymph, def not me then, I haven't been scanned since 20weeks. I hope it all goes well for your friend

nymphadora · 05/09/2010 19:58

It's fine tweakers! I have sections & know nothing about inductions.

Think each hospital has a policy, but I was told after 3 pessaries and no change, then they talk about c section. We had that talk as with DD they did nothing... Or rather had the talk, scheduled c section for the morning, and it went rather haywire that night. Let's just say that the midwife said later she didn't deliver DD so much as catch her.

starlight I agree with you for the most part, but there can be conditions where an induction is really the best option, such as low/running on empty amniotic fluid.

Fair point. Smile

LittleSilver · 05/09/2010 20:57

How exactly are you defining induction? From 1st prostin or from synto going up?

Hevster · 05/09/2010 21:32

I was induced with DD after 4 days of latent labour phase and a "failure to progress" hospital now admit they made mistakes and should have acted earlier but they put me on synto drip at 11 am and delivered DD with forceps at 4 am the following day so best part of 17 hrs - not an experience I would care to repeat but we live and learn!

tweakers · 05/09/2010 21:38

well starlight, you give the impression you know what you're talking about, so enlighten me....

also, out of interest, where do you put sweeps on the induction scale?

Shtf within 20 minutes after gel took effect - c-section decision made (to me!) after 90 minutes. Less than 90 minutes later I was in theatre and baby had been born.

cinnamongreyhound · 06/09/2010 14:22

I had one gel at 10pm and was told to get a good nights sleep and they'd give me another on in the morning but things started straight away. Waters broke on their own at 4pm, got to 5cm by 8pm at which point I felt the need to push. Did so for 1 1/2hrs after being told I was fully dilated, change of midwife and was examined again only to be told I was 5cm and to stop pushing. This resulted in my contractions slowing down so don't know what would have happened if things had been different here but I was then told to I needed the drip to get things going. It was 3am before I got the drip in as consultant was called away several times, was given until 9am to become fully dilated which I did (if I hadn't been by that point then they were going to strongly recommend a cs), drip was turned up again to help to get baby in best position and started pushing 10.30am, DS born at 11.20am.

It is a question she should ask before they start anything, I was monitored for 45mins before first gel inserted so she will have plenty of time to ask. Not sure how much is down to hospital policy or NICE guidelines so she can check that. They will give her a leaflet which will have some statistics in it.

Don't think 41+5 is early for an induction, pretty standard I think. I was 12 days over with DS when I had mine and will be the same when they want to induce me again. I'm the same as tweakers the daily monitoring is not possible for me so as much as I'd like to turn it down I will go with what is offered although I may try to put it off for a few days if I can. Waves to tweakers Grin
