Possibly TMI: Lochia question

Hi All,

Not sure if this is the right place for a 'post' childbirth question but it seemed the closest!

I gave birth 3.5 wks ago, ended up with forceps and a managed 3rd stage. Until this week my lochia has been following the standard pattern: bright red for a few days, turning pinky/brown to cream and light a few days back. But then in the last day or so it has gone back to bright red, not hugely heavy but 'real' blood none the less. With the odd teeny clot type thing, like you would get during a period.

This worries me as I was under the impression that it shouldn't go backwards if you see what I mean, that from cream it should dwindle off to nothing? And from what I can see on the internet it is too early to be a period. Is this something I should be worried about? I feel fine in myself. Any words of advice from those who have done the whole childbrith thing before would be gratefully appreciated!

Mine get slowing off and then restarting again heavier. All in all it lasted for about 16 weeks in the end.

I mentioned it to dr a few times after it went on so long but he just said it can happen. If you are at all worried though it certainly won't hurt to go and ask about it.

I found that mine did this too especially after I had a quite a busy day .if you start to get bigger clots then you need to call someone but put your feet up if you can and see if it eases off a bit
have you been over doing it a bit?

feedthegoat · 04/09/2010 20:54

kept not get! Arrggh, I'm starting to drive myself crackers by not checking what I type.

tallbirduk · 04/09/2010 22:37

Yeah, mine did that too MrsC and then it just sort of stopped at about 4 or 5 weeks.

I was also worried as everything tells you it should follow the pattern and taper off but mine didn't - turned out fine in the end.

If you've been doing more about the house/ walking etc that may explain it being heavier, but if you are worried at all talk to your midwife/ health visitor - they'd rather you say something than not.

hope all going well with new arrival

mine was the same as yours, in retrospect I have put it down to the forceps etc, it lasted for nearly 6 weeks, stopped and then made a brief return return for a couple of days and stopped when I went back on the pill

Thanks all, that is reassuring. I had a feeling every lady in the world didn't follow the little chart I was given when we left hospital! Being my first everything is completely new, the labour/birth was a completely unpredictable experience as well so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised!

Our daughter is lovely though, so all worthwhile!
