homebirth- how long did midwives stay?

Just read a comment on another thread about the "second" midwife only staying for an hour or 2

I have never, ever heard this before. With my first homebirth the first arrived and assessed me, realised I was 8cm dilated, called the other one, and they both stayed until baby was delivered, i was sorted, all was cleaned up and we'd all had some tea. they left together

second time they didn't actually make it to the birth, but they arrived and left together again

so, what is your experience? did your second midwife go after an hour or so? or did they both stay the duration?

dd1 only had one mw present but ended up in hosptial (with same mw) so doesn't count

dd2 first mw there about 2 hours before birth, second mw turned up 10 mins after baby born, both stayed for about an hour after birth then left

dd3 had issues getting waterbirth qualified mw there (no one on duty was qualified) so had slightly panicking mw on phone for over an hour, then 2 mws (one water expert, one not done waterbirth before) plus student (who'd never seen a birth before), all arrived together, one mw left approx 90 mins after birth, expert one plus student stayed two hours then left

ds - no mws there at birth! two (with no waterborth training) turned up about 5 mins after ds born (so just as well they were late as they'd have asked me to leave the pool!) They both stayed about 90 mins then left together.

I have had two hbs in the last 3 years.
Both midwives stayed till the end and left together after paperwork etc had been done.

With my first hb they didnt arrive together but they did with my 2nd.

I was under the impression you had two mw present for the actual birth?

dd2 and ds obviously hadn't read the NHS guidelines..

1st mw arrived at 9am.

Called for 2nd mw at 1pm, and ds was born at 2.40pm

Both stayed during the clean up and stitch up and left about 4.30pm after tea and biscuits.

Had midwide and student with me until I was 5+cm dilated. Then 2 midwives and student for duration (v long labour, had changeover of midwives). Actually had 3 midwives and student when pushed baby out!! Was home VBAC so they're were all really rooting for me and wanted to see the 'final' outcome Smile

One MW turned up 5 mins after dd was born, second one 15 minutes later. The second MW left after 30 minutes and the first one left after an hour.

2 DCs and 2 HBs :)

DD - two midwives for about 12 hours then after I gave birth they stayed for 2.5hrs
DS - MW with me for 1.5hrs and second MW turned up 20mins before I gave birth then afterwards they stayed for about 2hrs again.

1st midwife came and went until I was 4cm (with my agreement, she carried on her appointments in my area but would have stayed if I'd asked her to), 2mins after measuring 7cm I started pushing so 2nd stage v quick, 2nd midwife didn't get there in time....arrived 3mins after DS!

2nd midwife stayed about an hour after birth, 1st midwife another few hours after that

TheProvincialLady · 31/08/2010 20:57

With DS1 the first MW arrived an hour before he was born, second MW about ten minutes beforehand. They both stayed for a couple of hours afterwards (I think) and definitely left together.

First HB mw was here for the entire labour (1.5 hours) as she had popped round for a cuppa before it started. She called a student who arrived at the pushing stage and the 2nd mw arrived 15 mins after birth.

Second. My came straight away as labour started, stayed the whole hours labour. Student arrived 3 mins after baby was born, 2nd mw arrived 15 mins after that.

1st hb, 1 mw from about 9pm, another arrived 'just in time' (with gas and air! She just managed to get it set up while I was pushing and I managed about 3 gasps of it before ds arrived! Felt cheated!). 2nd mw left about an hour after the birth, 1st stayed to see ds latch on...He screamed fit to bust for 4 hours, but refused to feed. Eventually, she asked dh to fetch formular, as she couldn't leave until she'd seen him feed and settled, and he was getting so distressed as he couldn't latch on. Ds fed from a syrynge, fell asleep staright away, and she finally left.
2nd hb, I made sure the g&a was in the 1st midwife's car! She arrived about 3am, 2nd arrived adout 5am, ds3 born 7am, they both stayed to clearup, have cup of tea, etc, then left about 8. I then got round to getting breakfast ready! Shock
I think it depends on how your birth goes, and they decide between them, depending on their other commitments, shifts, lack of sleep, etc, who should stay and for how long.

1st mw came at midnight, second one at 1am. baby born 2am then 2nd mw left after an hour. 1st one left at 4am and then came back at 11.30 the following morning on her way to clinic poor thing. In between she had to drive to the hospital to put in her paperwork.

tablefor3 · 01/09/2010 10:39

thisisyesterday I think that the post you are referring to said that the second MW only stayed an hour or so because the baby delivered in that time. She then left after.

In my case, one arrived, went "whoops you're actually 6 cms and contracting regularly (despite our slight sniffiness that you were an exaggerating first timer)", called MW2. Both then stayed through delivery, 3rd stage, clear-up, note writing and left 8 hours after they first arrived.

no, the post i saw was implying that it was always the case....?
