Hi,

I like the idea of a waterbirth, should I? Any experiences? Would love your comments please.
Thanks.

Best thing i ever did!

Amazing to labour and birth in the water IME

Very quick and calm

Loved it ...I used gas and air to help with the pain relief

No stitches

Everything for me was very positive and if i ever have another DC would be water birth all the way again

Would definitely recommend. Had a waterbirth with DC1 and found it to give a good degree of pain relief alongside gas and air.

No stitches for me either and I was given the doppler to do my own monitoring. Very hands off from a MW point of view.

Was asked to get out a few times to check I could still wee ok - had a long labour.

Had planned to have another waterbirth with DC2 but he was too quick - 1hr 16mins in total!

If you choose to use the pool you can still have pethidene - you have to wait 2 hours after the injection is given.

Good luck!

Had water births with both DC, both were absolutely brilliant. Very calm and chilled out, 2 MW and DH present. Had gentle music playing and dimmed lights. Had gas and air, delivered both DC myself and pulled them up out of the water.

Very peaceful and utterly wonderful. I look back with very fond memories of both births Smile

I laboured in the water with DS and loved it - I want to give birth in the water if I ever gave another baby.

Definitely go for it- the worst that can happen is you might not like it, in which case you can just get out!

BertieBotts · 29/08/2010 02:47

um HAVE another.

luvlybunchofcoconuts · 29/08/2010 16:17

iloved it, and would do it all again, had gas and air.
although i did manage to get a 2nd degree tear but hey ho!
i had 2 midwifes with me and if i could and if i have another baby i think i might request those 2 again! they were just brilliant.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/08/2010 16:22

I had three midwives so there Grin If you are going for a water birth make sure you can actually give birth in the pool too IYSWIM - some places may not have the training or pool depth to do this, and sod trying to climb out of the pool when the baby starts coming for real!

Really wanted one with DC2 but was progressing so fast that I didn't get one in the end. Sort of had a waterbirth though as she was born in the caul.

Hope you get the birth you want Smile

had WB for 3rd DS and delivered him in the water too. Coped on just G & A cos pain relief from water so good. Only 1st degree tearing. Was about 5cm when I got in the pool - some folk say not to get in too early cos it can slow you down.

2nd degree with DS2 who wasn't in water. 1st was emcs and worked my way thru the drug cabinet then (it did go on for 50 hours though!).

Can't recommend the WB enough - it was so calm and lovely and honestly felt it was less painful. Go for it!

MrsC2010 · 30/08/2010 12:26

I got to 8cms in around 4 hours using the pool and no pain relief, I really enjoyed it. I had to come out and transfer to another hospital before the pushing stage due to labour stalling and baby being stuck cause her head was tilted too far backwards (can't remember what it's called). So as it turned out I ended up with emergency forceps, epistiotomy and full epidural!

BUT: I would definitely try a water birth again for our next one. DH was in charge of water temp and back massage and it worked well!

I had a water birth for DD2 and laboured in the water for DD1, but then chose to get out just before the final push because I felt the need to walk around between contractions. No pain relief needed, not even gas and air, and no tearing (although both babies were fairly modestly sized, which presumably helped). It was a great experience both times, helped by the fact that I was in a birthing centre with two midwives rather than on a busy ward.

I laboured in the pool with my DD and loved it although had to get out for actual delivery - the pool bit was greatthough - highly recommend it..
