Anyone had a home VBAC?

Not even pregnant (yet!) so just wondering really.

I had an EMCS after planning a home birth with an independent midwife. Tiny, very distressed baby emerged, no labour (midwife picked up on distress before labour established) but all fine in the end. I'm not sure that funds will stretch to being supported my an independent midwife again and always assumed I'd just push for an ELCS so I don't have to go through labour in hospital (with fetal monitoring, on back, intervention, possible second EMCS etc.).

But now I'm wondering whether they would agree to a VBAC at home? I'm not convinced of my chances of a successful VBAC in hospital, having never been in established labour before and having a deep aversion to all things 'medical'.

I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on this, especailly if they have had experience of home VBAC themselves.

Thanks :)

I tried to! Got stuck in second stage and had to transfer in (only 10 mins), all fine, nothing to do with it being vbac or at home. I had the independent midwife for the vbac though, as couldn't face trying to argue for a home vbac with the hospital (and didn't want a repeat of my first birth in hospital, that's a different story..).

Although they can't make you have a hospital birth, you'd have to be prepared for quite a fight for a home vbac I think - there are helpful letters on the aims website for forcing support for a homebirth if you need.

Yes, I did last summer Smile Did have to fight for it, researched a lot! Only live 5 mins from hospital though. It was the most amazing experience! I think it depends on your area etc. I know some consultants recommend a HBAC.

I had a home waterbirth VBAC.

For various reasons I hired an Ind MW - one reason being I didn't want the fight with the local hospital about VBAC'ing at home.

Hi there was a thread about this about this a few days ago. I posted my home water VBAC story. It's here if you fancy a read:

Yes, I did and it was great!

Bear in mind that the risks of rupture are less than several other significant risks (placenta problems, haemorrhage, shoulder dystocia etc.) and that a catastrophic rupture is very rare.

But you /will/ hear a lot about it.

It's important to balance that out against the risks of a repeat caesarean if you feel you cannot labour effectively in hospital. For me, a home VBAC was definitely the safest option.

No childbirth is 100% safe. Statistically, a home birth is as safe as hospital birth. The only difference in a VBAC is the rupture factor, but this is greatly overstated.
