Does anyone have any recommendations on the best Maternity Unit to use near to Yeadon, Leeds. I would love to use a midwife led unit if possible but if not then the next best thing. I have just moved to Yorkshire from Taunton in Somerset and am a bit lost!! Any advice would be much apprciated even if it is where not to go!

Harrogate. Although it's not the closest! I had DD1 there. Very very very good - didn't even see a doctor, and water birth. Lovely hospital. But not too close for you !

Apart from that, most of my friends have had positive experiences at Jimmys and LGI. Wharfedale is ok I think ?? I have a friend who had hers at Bradford (lives in Horsforth) and it was ok although she was a bit disconcerted by being asked to take part in a study on poverty & childbirth ..........................

I am sure anywhere will be fine.

Around leeds, there aren't really any MLUs that are separate from hospitals if that's what you're after.

Choices are; LGI which has a few home from home midwife led rooms and 2 pool rooms, Jimmys which again has some home from home rooms but no pools. Harrogate is smaller and a much friendlier feeling hospital, that's where we're booked in (due Sunday!). hoping for a water birth.

Wharfedale (Otley) doesn't do births any more I don't think. A friend of mine is having hers at Bradford, but I don't know what it's like.

Its a bit further for you to get to but have heard lots of good things about Calderdale Royal in Halifax and its birth facilites. My sister-in-law had both her children there five years apart with consistently high standards. She was very impressed with the level of care and had her second baby there despite having moved out of area.

Worth considering perhaps :)

I had my baby in Calderdale - she's 3.5 now and can only praise the care we both had. It was not an entirely straightforward birth, I ended up being induced and having a c-section but the staff throughout were great. The hospital was clean and even the food was nice!
Bradford have been doing some big study into poverty/childbirth - its a really busy hospital there too.
The other hospital I know in the area is Airedale (also in Bradford) which in my experience (not maternity) is a really good hospital too - my Mum was treated there.

LGS or Jimmys, LGI is better.
Harrogate is very friendly and sweet but has occasionally fallen short of acceptable standards of care.

Calderdale is lovely. Very nice midwife led unit and fab consultant led facilitied for if it doesn't all go to plan

I'm booked in a Jimmies for a december birth. They seem very efficient and I have heard goo reviews. Also it has ample parking and is just off the M1. Things you don't want to think about when your in labour but it is good to consider.

LGI is in the centre of leeds and apparently parking is stupid but have also heard of good things. A friend also due in december is booked in there

I had both dc's at LGI. The home from home midwife led units were lovely, and I laboured in the pool for dc1 (until her foot popped out unexpectedly and I was whisked off for an EMCS but that's an entirely different story. Had a very speedy VBAC in the home from home unit for dc2).

I live equidistant from Jimmys and LGI and went for the latter because of the pool and home from home units. Both easily accessible.

Good luck Smile

I had mine at Bradford and was absolutely overwhelmed by how fantastic they were. When i went overdue (by 2 weeks) they organised extra scans and heart monitoring so that I wasn't worried without batting an eye. In the end I did have to be induced but even then everyone was great-letting me go home after they saw I didn't need the prostin so I could rest and get one last chance at labour starting on its own. When I had trouble getting my dd to latch, and she lost 10% of her birthwieght, they had a bf'ing clinic that got me readmitted with dd where anywhere else they would have admitted her to paediatrics, hung a drip and I might have had to leave her overnight. If that had happened she'd have been on formula the very next day, I can say. I can't praise the staff at BRI highly enough- they're fantastic. There is a birthpool there- I didn't get to use it sadly. Good luck whichever you choose!

Am due in Dec and we're booked into Harrogate. Didn't want to go to LGI only because of parking and traffic. Getting into central Leeds is a nightmare during rush hour and I didn't want to go through that just incase my waters broke at 8am in the morning, which would just be s*ds law! :o

Don't live that far from you and Harrogate is only about 5-10 mins max further than LGI.

jojomummumtobe · 02/09/2010 08:42

Thank you for all your help. I think I am going to go with Harrogate as I like the idea of a smaller hospital and am worried about central Leeds traffic. don't want my first to be born on the hard shoulder!

I will be experiencing Harrogate any day now ( am currently 11 days over!) so will report back for you.....

Cosmosis · 08/09/2010 13:02

Just to say, my experience of Harrogate was excellent. The birth got a bit dodgy, and the delivery staff were all fabulous, and the aftercare was also excellent. I will post more specifics when I can, but they far far far exceeded our expectations.
