Lochia alba (possibly TMI!)

Hello everyone
Can I ask for descriptions of your lochia alba (the yellow/white end part of lochia)?

  1. Was it a yellow colour different to your 'normal' yellowish vaginal discharge? 2)Was it more mucus like or creamy?
  2. Was there enough of it to fill a panty liner?

sorry for the questions and apologies if you are eating breakfast! I think I may start some sort of lochia pictures website so ladies know what is normal and what is not - it's so bloody hard to know, isn't it?!

Thank you very much in advance.

I didn't have the yellowy bit at all! I bled for 5 weeks which tailed off like a period, when the bleeding had almost stopped I had some terrible cramps and a lot of fresh blood for 1 day then it completely stopped. No mucous/yellow/white discharge at all!

no yellow here after any of my 3 children. Was like a really heavy period that got lighter and then just stopped.

Thank you. You wonder who these lucky women are that have the 'text book' lochia lasting no more than two weeks, following the red, brown, yellow, white colour code, don't you?!

What is lochia / lochia alba?

Sorry that's probably a really stupid question!

Marjee · 17/08/2010 14:39

Lochia is the bleeding after the birth. I've never heard of lochia alba before!

curlywurlycremeegg · 17/08/2010 14:42

alba is normally more brownish/old blood, like the very end of a period. It's not usually heavy, and should not have an offensive smell to it, old blood yes, but not really pongy! If it feels heavy or has an offensive odour them it may be worth seeing your m/w or gp as it can be a sign of an infection.

Marjee, it's just medical talk used to confuse! The is rubra, serosa and then alba, the changing "states" of lochia Grin

Oh I had that now I remember but it was more of a very, very pale peach or pink than yellow. I think it was creamy not mucosy and there wasn't enough to fill a liner, just colour them for a few days. Hmmm TMI?
