Why were they using swabs in your vagina?

I've never heard of this happening.

EccentricaGallumbits · 07/08/2010 18:34

god poor you.
would imagine not common at all. have you complained or asked to see your notes? there should be a swab count at the end of any birth or repair.

EccentricaGallumbits · 07/08/2010 18:35

use swabs or a cotton tampon thing to hold the blood back while repairing.

Tootlesmummy · 07/08/2010 18:35

Jbells why would that make you want a c section where they have to cut you open and then stitch it back up etc?

jbells · 07/08/2010 19:01

i know, i just couldnt walk for 2 weeks aftawards :( thinking mayb a c-section mite a a whole lot less pain next time round, yeah they used the swabs to stop the blood so they could c where they were stitching as i had heameragged ( cant spell that lol) yeah saw notes and did complain they dont use them swabs in the hosp i had dd now

A c section is a major op and one I think you should avoid if at all possible.

jbells · 07/08/2010 19:33

That sounds awful jbells. I think you should talk to the midwife when you get to hospital, or make sure it is put on your notes that this happened last time so that they can reassure you as they go along.

I've just re-read my post from earlier. When I said "I've never heard of this happening", I meant that I'd never heard of swabs being left behind, so I think it must be pretty unusual.

I agree with the others that a natural birth would probably be preferable - the chances of this happening again must be very slim indeed.

Sorry this has happened to you.

Well I had to have x-rays after my cs as they thought they had left a swab inside me... So it's not necessarily a solution.

Feel bad for you . x

jbells · 08/08/2010 15:45

guess next time round ill just be asking them afterwards to keep checking they will be sick of me lol

Good lord...hope you lodged a formal complaint? That is shocking poor care.

goodlifemummy · 14/08/2010 17:16
Shock
SleepEludesMe · 14/08/2010 17:28

Definitely get someone to review your notes for your reassurance. Wouldn't advise a section - recovery is tough and anyway, if they left a swab in your abdomen you'd be in much worse trouble :(. Sorry you've had such a horrible experience.

jbells · 25/08/2010 19:33

thanks for comments i did lodge a formal complaint they have now removed those swabs from being used in that hospital
