How does labour start when baby is back to back?

Hi

I am 39 weeks with DC3 and have been told this afternoon by the midwife that the baby is partically back to back.

I was just wandering how labour started for anyone else who was told this. DD1 was csection and DD2 wasn't back to back so haven't experienced it.

I have had lower back ache this afternoon but that could be because I have taken DC to library, went shopping and have just cooked dinner!

Thanks

Both DS and DD were back to back. Both labours started in the middle of the night with mild contractions and a trickle of fluids. Had mild contractions with both of them for a long time, 15 hours plus and then had a massive intense stage with lots of back, hip and pelvis pain and a very quick delivery (3 and 5 minutes). Wore TENS machine throughout (a total godsend as it pushes back against the back contractions) and used G &A. DD was born back to back but DS turned midlabour which was the most painful bit! Dont lie on your back, stand up, walk, go on all fours as it reduces the pressure on your back. DS was a homebirth but I didnt go into hospital with DD until 8cm so I found the pain very manageable alhtough obv this isnt the same for everyone I know!

My first was back to back, labour started slowly, it took an entire weekend just for the show. And it was extremely painful I couldn't lie down at all so I got very worn out.I'm good with pain, my second one was a great position and I only had gas and air for the last few mins, but back to back is intense.

Because this isn't your first though it will be quicker. The only relief I could get with btb though was being in the bath, I spent a few nights trying to rest by sitting on a kitchen chair turned backwards. I also used a tens machine, I don't know if it did much, maybe it would have been worse without it.

The big problem I found was that once in hospital being hooked up to the epidural made my whole situation worse because then I had to lie on my back and the pain was just horrible. The doctors had expected dd to turn with their hyper contractions but she didn't. It was rough.

Labour with btb stops and starts. Try and find a way to get some rest before it really kicks in.

Both my girls were back to back.

Both labours started with my waters breaking.
DD1- 2 weeks late and induced.Waters broke, 27 hour labour with very slow dilation, epidural (4 top ups!) taken the theatre, turned with vontouse, then forceps.

DD2- 4 days early, Waters broke, fully dilated in 2 hours at home, no pain relief, Forceps again in theatre. 6 hours total

DS was B2B. The contractions were in my back, which threw me totally! I'd read contractions were a tightening of your belly, so thought I just had backache (I was very young and stupid then ). They started during Eastenders (!), and I finally cottoned on to the fact I was in labour around 3am... I am slightly more clued-up now!

Thank you for the replies. I am still getting a bit of back ache but nothing else yet.

Ds2 was back to back. Waters had been leaking since 22 weeks, resealed at around 34 I think but was on bedrest, went properly at 39 weeks around 5 am. Slept a while and then had some contractions so went into hospital. Labour took around 1 hour 20 minutes from my notes. Third baby. Was very intense as it all happened so quickly, I felt the pain everywhere it seemed!

Mine didn;t stop and start - woke up at 4am with mild backache and period-type cramps, which steadily got more intense throughout the day. went to hospital at about 9pm and was 3-4cm dilated by then. was allowed in birth pool at about 2am and it was bliss. got to fully dilated by 11am on gas and air. however unfortunately his head was well and truly wedged so ended up in theatre with him being turned with forceps - but that doesn't usually happen.

good luck, you'll be fine!

I'm new here but I thought I would post as I gave birth to my daughter (first baby) four weeks ago and she was back to back. My labour started with my waters breaking at midnight, and my contractions started immediately - I'd also been having period-type cramping pains for around two days prior.

I had a 40 hour labour, with two shots of pethidine (the first worked pretty well; the second made me groggy but didn't stop the pain). When I got to the labour ward after 28 hours, the midwife told me I was not even at 4cm (so not in 'active labour'), and so I was given a hormone drip to speed things up and intensify my contractions. I had an epidural just before the drip, and so many top ups I lost count - the epidural forced me to lie on my back, which was the one position I had not been able to stand all the way through.

The consultant came in when I was finally fully dilated and frightened the hell out of me with talk of forceps and ventouse and possible section. Luckily, when the time came to push and the midwife was feeling the baby's head, the baby turned almost at the last minute and she was delivered in 13 minutes. I had stitches, but the delivery was nothing compared to everything that preceded it!

I thought it would never end, but it did, and I'd do it all over again. Try using water to relieve the pain - when I was at home early on, I stood in the shower for what seemed like hours with hot water beating on my lower back and it seemed to help. I've since heard other people say that the birthing pool was great for them, but that wasn't an option for me unfortunately!
