i have just been told that you no longer get tea and toast after giving birth, that can't be right, can it??

surely, thats the best thing about having a baby (apart from actually having the baby iyswim).

apparently it's due to 'health and safety'

please tell me someone is winding me up

And this is why ive opted for a homebirth, i can have a full roast dinner if i fancy it

mumatron · 30/07/2010 16:46

oh no, if i have a hb i will end up making the full roast!

i plan at least 24hrs of newborn cuddling before returning to the madness home.

I had toast - no tea though as I hate tea, so had toast and a drink of juice

how can it be halth and saftey? get your other half or birth parner to bring toaster and bread along with kettle and tea bag?

Meglet · 30/07/2010 16:50

You aren't missing much if you don't eat hospital food.

M&S sandwiches & fresh juice are much nicer.

mumatron · 30/07/2010 16:57

it's just a bit bizarrre that women have been having tea and toast after delivery for years, buut now its a h&s risk?

i'm only about 10 min away from the hosp, so i could get dp to pop home and make some. it would probably still be hotter than what the hosp manages!

it is the best meal of a ifetime i reckon. i dont even particuarly like tea but it tasted just AMAZING. surely they wont stop a woman who has just given birth that. SURELY. midwives are wonderful people= i reckon they will see sense no matter hat the rules are....

serenity · 30/07/2010 17:02

I've never been fed after giving birth. I went nearly 48hrs with nothing but water when I had DS1 (that does include labour btw) and it's one of the reasons I got out asap after having DS2 and DD. Once you give birth, if you have no particular issues, they seem quite happy to forget about you.

ivykaty44 · 30/07/2010 17:02

meglet - sorry bnut have to disagree on M&S, not much tastier than mcdee's really

go for fresh bread and marmite would be better

Marjee · 30/07/2010 17:03

That sounds like a wind-up! Ds was born last October and the mw gave me tea and toast straight after the birth, I think its the best I've ever tasted!

mumatron · 30/07/2010 17:08

i really do hope it's a wind up.

i'm going for 20 week scan on monday so will ask then.

for the people who haven't been fed after birth, what are you supposed to do if it's the middle of the night? wait for breakfast or go and get yourself food?? what about people who have to labour alone? do they just starve?

Lovethesea · 30/07/2010 17:12

I was given water and a bread roll with butter and jam - no toast available but I can't remember why! That roll and jam was the best meal I have ever had, I was starving hungry after fasting for the previous 20 hours (elcs and delayed going down to theatre).

fifitot · 30/07/2010 17:12

I had a baby a 2 weeks ago and got alot of tea and toast - and biscuits!

mumatron · 30/07/2010 17:18

lovethesea i'm sure anything tastes good after 20 hours fasting!

have never been given biscuits before though, sounds like my kind of hospital!

HotSprocket · 30/07/2010 17:18

I got tea and toast after delivery and at 10pm every night i was on the ward.

aactionmum · 30/07/2010 17:20

i had my baby last year and had tea & toast after giving birth, but i was too excited to stand/sit still to eat

they also gave me lots of biscuits and nice tea every time i went to the maternity ward for check ups & emergencies during my pregnancy.

i love my maternity hospital

oh bugger
maybe I can take my own!

All my books say to take food with you.

PuzzleRocks · 30/07/2010 17:26

I was given bugger all the first time round. Had to beg for a glass of water once DH had gone home.
Got tea and a very much appreciated packet of bourbon biscuits second time.

loonyrationalist · 30/07/2010 17:32

DD2 is 17 months. I fitted hospital issue tea & toast (and biscuits) into the 3hrs between having her & getting home.

With DD1 however I had to fight to get anything to eat despite being in hospital for 9 days.

Different hospitals, I know where I would go given the unlikely event of another child

FakePlasticTrees · 30/07/2010 17:34

I was given hot chocolate and toast when I had DS in December...

take a full picnic...

mumatron · 30/07/2010 17:56

df i'll bring you toast if you bring me some

i will take my own little snacks anyway but it's the delivery room toast i want!

I had my baby yesterday and had a round of tea and toast whilst in labour, one straight after (also one for DH) and one when I got to the ward. Best meal ever

mumatron · 31/07/2010 15:05

aww congratulations betty

well, if some hospitals can do tea and toast, then i don't see why they all can't!

SlummyMummyAndProud · 31/07/2010 15:08

I think it depends on the hospital TBH.

I do know that the Southern General Maternity in Glasgow has stopped this due to H&S as it was in the paper here. You will now get offered cereal or a roll

PlumBumMum · 31/07/2010 15:10

My friend had her baby on Tuesday and text me as soon as she was born and the first thing I text back was....
CONGRATULATIONS, now enjoy your toast!

Hotsprocket our Hospital also gives you tea & toast at night I loved it!
