Posterior/back to back baby and home birth - any experiences?

I know I've already started one thread along these lines but I really need some reassurance. I am terrified of hospital/instrumental delivery and really really upset and worried now.

I am currently 40+5 with DC2. Have a DD already who was born at home on her due date with no problems - 12 hours established labour, 2 hours pushing (but I was not in a great position in hindsight). This baby however has been back to back at most (but not all) appointments since 28 weeks, and today was still completely posterior. Midwife said she couldn't feel the back at all, only tightly folded limbs. Head is still high and free.

Midwife tried a sweep but no joy, cervix is still long/thick/closed.

I have been doing lots of walking/kneeling/leaning forwards/rocking on birth ball for weeks now but it seems to be making no difference. I've been reading spinningbabies too, and taking it all in, and trying it all out, but no joy. I'm so worried, I feel (irrationally I know) like maybe this is what I get for having it so easy last time round.

Is home birth still a realistic prospect? Please be honest, I need all the time possible to get my head round this if not. I feel panicky and rather hopeless tbh, have spent most of the afternoon in tears.

Oh, My mum also said I was ten days "late"! 5 days isn't much over due.

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 04/08/2010 11:54

Back from hospital.

Scan shows baby to be the right way round with head deeply down though it feels no different to me . But there was a clear spine at the front on the left, and the back of a head.

Fluid levels fine, blood flow across placenta fine, growth fine (she commented on 'chubby cheeks' - not bloody surprised the amount of cake I've been eating), placenta looks healthy still. So nobody thinks we need to worry for now, HB is still the intention and midwives are happy with that.

Oh and they had another go at a sweep and cervix is now fully effaced and she could get one finger in.

Ooh, all sounding very good!
Plan a big dinner party and go get your eyebrows waxed, thats what worked for me lol!

Brilliant I hope you're feeling much better about it now! It won't be long before you're posting that you've had a fab HB!

QueenofDreams · 04/08/2010 13:39

Oh I hope things get moving for you soon! I remember how frustrating it was at that stage. DS was born 18 days overdue, and by the end I was so bloody fed up, and grumpy and generally pissed off!

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 04/08/2010 13:49

18 days over [howl]

How did it go in the end?

OP posts:
QueenofDreams · 04/08/2010 13:52

It went fine no intervention just had to do guided pushing at the end as DS had meconium in his waters, so they wante me to get him out fast. The community midwives here have indicated that they wouldn't react in that way, as it's actually quite common.

But yeah was all fine - DS is healthy, I was fine just had a second degree tear. I had him in hospital though, not at home.

hairymelons · 04/08/2010 16:45

Oh that's excellent news

mololoko · 04/08/2010 19:05

am feeling v. excited for you now. well done on spinning that baby. can't wait to hear more news.

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 04/08/2010 19:15

See I am having trouble believing it has spun! It still feels the same to me - kicks all over and so on. But the evidence on the screen was very clear. Don't know if it is possible my midwife was wrong all along about the position?

The whole thing seems slightly unreal to me now tbh. I am having difficulty in believing the baby will ever be born - I have been having dreams about being in labour and then waking up and crying because I'm not.

Tomorrow is their 'cut off point' at which I suspect the pressure for induction will start - my midwife rang this afternoon and said she was off on holiday tomorrow for two weeks but was handing me over to another midwife from the same team who would be ringing daily to check how I am doing. Unfortunately we get terrible mobile reception here so I might just miss the calls. I will still be going in for monitoring, but don't feel I need daily reminders that I am still pregnant

OP posts:
hairymelons · 04/08/2010 19:27

How often do you go for monitoring?

Babieseverywhere · 04/08/2010 19:42

All the best QueenOfFlamingEverything, sending good labour vibes your way

I am just 4 days behind you. Also with an OP baby which has just moved OA, hurrah.

I would be very grateful for any information you have on monitoring etc...I have just turned down my first inducement date and hoping for some baby action in the next few days

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 04/08/2010 19:57

They want me to go in every day from tomorrow, but I will probably go every other day. We live 22 miles from the hospital, DP doesn't drive and I am having trouble driving long distances now, and we're having to get someone to take us in.

BE - I have to ask this - can you tell the baby has moved? Because I really cannot tell the difference at all. It was clear as day on the scan but to me my bump feels the same, I can't make out a back but can feel limbs everywhere. Very odd.

OP posts:
Babieseverywhere · 04/08/2010 20:01

No, I didn't know the baby had moved. I am feeling kicks under my right ribs high up and always have. Starting to wonder if last week's midwife was mistaken thinking baby was OP (as a week earlier another one said baby was OA)

This is my third pregnancy and I still have no idea what I can feel limbs, head/bum wise.

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 04/08/2010 20:06

Oh good its not just me then! I can still see limbs going from side to side when I just had a bath!

OP posts:
CheeseandGherkins · 04/08/2010 20:11

Hope it goes well. My ds2 was op, had him at 39 weeks. Labour was painful but fast, about an hour and 20 mins on my notes so having an op baby doesn't necessarily mean it'll be a long labour. Good luck!

hairymelons · 04/08/2010 21:18

Bloody hell, that is a bit of trek.

It all sounds very encouraging though, hopefully you won't be making that journey many times

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 05/08/2010 10:16

I saw a shooting star last night and got all excited as we saw one the night we found out I was pg, and so I decided that it was A Sign. But nope, I am still resolutely pregnant this morning.

And to make me feel even better, a friend who was due a full 5 weeks after me has just posted on FB to say she is off to the hospital to have her baby this morning [wail] [self pity].

And my phone keeps ringing and I just cannot face talking to anyone apart from DP and my mother. I have become a hermit. I want to kill everyone who tries to be nice to me and especially everyone who wants to know if I've had the baby yet

And I'm scared. Scared in case I am making the wrong decisions.

OP posts:
mamasunshine · 05/08/2010 10:35

Poor you! That baby is far to comfy I think as long as you are having the regular checks/monitoring etc, then you KNOW the baby is fine . Just keep doing what you feel most comfortable doing. Itthe day comes and you feel you should go into hospital, then you can. Otherwise, I'm sure you are fine as you are...surely he/she can't be far away! Come on babyqueen come out now!!! Are you 42 weeks now?

Babieseverywhere · 05/08/2010 10:48

{{{Hugs}}} It is hard trying to do the 'right thing' whilst being full of hormones and having well meaning pressure from all sides. Is your DH being supportive ?

I am wondering how 'late' I would allow this pregnancy to go. I am hopeing that baby will turn up in the next few days so I won't have to think about it.

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 05/08/2010 14:26

I am 42 weeks today. Luckily DP is incredibly supportive, he's read up on it and says he fully agrees with waiting and seeing and monitoring. We've agreed though that at the first indication there is an actual problem, I will almost certainly go in for induction - the distance from the hospital here is too far for me to be happy with HB if there are signs of something wrong.

BE - I never thought it would get this far! I have been going to bed every night assuming it will happen tomorrow... It's a real test for anti-interventionist me. If it goes beyond the weekend then I think I will need to think again about my decision.

OP posts:
Babieseverywhere · 05/08/2010 14:45

Well, both our babies on in a better position now, surely that will increase our odds of going into labour at some point.

Congratulations on getting to full term not many woman do, in our intervention fuelled medical era will get anywhere near 42 weeks pregnant

I am only 41 + 2/3, so hopeing for baby to arrive over the weekend.

Though my 3 year old DD has just told me baby isn't ready to leave yet and will be arriving Monday !? Wonder if DD is right

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 05/08/2010 14:51

DD(7) told me on the due date she thought baby would be here last thursday, when I would have been 41 weeks. At the time I nearly screamed in horror at the thought of another week - little did I know how great that would've been...

I'd be less concerned if there was any chance it was a miscalculation of dates, but I know the date I conceived and that does make this baby well and truly cooked now

Good luck for the weekend

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 05/08/2010 21:20

OMFG I just had a show

Maybe I will have a baby at some point then...?
