hey all

anyone tried arnica post childbirth? experiences?

also what how long is it safe to take arnica 200c for?

am 11 weeks post delivery having lots of problems with my episiotomy. took 30k immediately post delivery for about 2 weeks, didn't notice any difference. have now had my wound cauterised and my reflexologist said take arnica 200c. but on the bottle it says just take it for 3 days, and ive read that its harmful at that strenth to take for longer. so was planning to take it for 3 days (today is third day) and then switch to 30c strength for a few more days.

any advice?? thanks!

This homeopathic Arnica, right? Are you aware that it probably doesn't contain a single molecule of Arnica and that the "strength" is how much it is diluted - ie. 200c is far more dilute than 30c (homeopathic practitioners believe that the more dilute something is, the better/stronger it works so the opposite of regular medicines).

I am generally a bit sceptical but with ds1, had a big episiotomy and ventouse delivery, took arnica and felt great! Might all just be psychological though.

LadySanders · 26/07/2010 17:08

arnica is mainly for bruising & shock, so i wouldn't have thought its the right remedy 11 weeks post birth - i took it with all 3 of mine leading up to the births but not afterwards.

also generally with homeopathic remedies, if they're not working pretty quickly, they're not the right remedy, so if the 200 hasn't done anything, continuing iwth the 30 isn't worth it, in my layman's opinion!

muslimah28 · 26/07/2010 17:22

japhrimel yep, totally understand how homoepathy works, thanks!

interesting re stopping if no effect found.i'm not sure what effect i should be seeing though. its supposed to speed up the healing process, but will i really see my open wound joining up? i've been very tired since yesterday (started taking it day before yesterday), don't know if that means something!

i'd have thought Staphysagria might be a good remedy for episiotomy - worth looking it up

muslimah28 · 27/07/2010 12:40

ive looked it up, it doesn't really seem to be relevant

the midwives all swear by arnica, for postnatal healing of episiotomies. but i was wondering what people's actual experiences are. and also of how people used the 200c one....

Had my daughter in Nov. I took 200c for longer than 3 days - didn't realise about the time limit...Anyway I took it for about 2 weeks, perhaps more. I didn't have any perineal tearing, a small internal tear which was stitched and a small labial graze. So not really much damamge and nothing like yours. Prety swollen but I remember feeling better after about 4 days and completely normal after a week. However, I have no idea if that was due to the arnica or not but I figured I may as well take it.

Sorry - that's not much help - I did feel I healed quickly but no idea if it was anything to do with arnica.

runnybottom · 28/07/2010 14:22

Actually arnica works. Homeopathic arnica does not, due to there not being any arnica in it and homeopathy being a crock of shit.

pinguina · 28/07/2010 14:59

I am planning to take it post CS but confused as to when/how much/for how many days. Does anyone know?

japhrimel · 28/07/2010 15:16

I'm planning on using actual Arnica for a few days at least to reduce swelling.

Homeopathic preparations aren't harmful at any weakness because they don't contain active ingredients. So taking the 200c won't be any more harmful than taking 30c.

runnybottom · 28/07/2010 15:20

I missed the bit about it being harmful. Lol. Only if you're allergic to water.

japhrimel · 28/07/2010 15:20

Or sugar if you're taking the pills.

sazlocks · 28/07/2010 15:22

Hi - I took arnica after both of my c sections and calendula. Arnica in the morning and calendula in the evening. Only for a few days with both. I think it helped with healing. Was walking around quite well by day 3 both times and off the pain meds by day 7 both times.

japhrimel · 28/07/2010 15:25

Was that Arnica & Calendula or Homeopathic arnica & calendula?

sazlocks · 28/07/2010 15:35

I think it was homeopathic arnica and calendula - I can't remember what the strength was - rather unhelpfully!

runnybottom · 28/07/2010 15:36

The strength was 0 then.

sazlocks · 28/07/2010 15:41

I just went and found it.
The arnica was 200 and was in 8gp capsules - came from a homeopathic pharmacy.
The calendula was 30 and was in 4 gp capsules and also came from a homepathic pharmacy.

japhrimel · 28/07/2010 16:02

Oh okay. I just wondered if it had actually been Arnica. Thanks for checking
