Perineal massage

Hi all,

I'm 35 weeks and am just starting to really think about the birth. Someone has mentioned perineal massage to me and I wondered how many mums actually did it before the birth, what they used as massage oil, how they did it and how often and, most importantly, did it prevent tearing? I've got pretty awful piles (and the iron tablets I've got to take aren't helping! )and wonder also if this is going to be problem (how come my mother never told me about piles when she was raving about how wonderful pregnancy is?!) Anyway, any advice would be gratefully recieved!

Thanks homemamma. Little bub is breech at the moment and I've been booked in for a CS in two weeks time (!!), but I've bought the almond oil and intend to try the massage thing just in case he decides to turn round and I go for a natural labour. Thanks again

My dh did this for me every night for six weeks. We just giggled our way through it every night.
He thought it was funny hearing me practising my breathing through it all.
We just used Olive Oil from the chemist on the advice of midwife.
I delivered my first baby at home and only had a tear high up on the right where I hadn't thought to massage. I didn't need any stitches though and she had a BIG head. :-)
