BH or early labour? Clueless!

Was overdue with my first and induced so have no idea what going into labour naturally feels like. Don't think I have had any BHs or if I have don't notice them.

Am 40 + 6 and have a sharpish pain just above pubic bone now and cramps, like period pain, coming and going but not in any pattern at all. Feels like period starting tbh. Bearable pain and not especially increasing in intensity. However lots of pressure being felt down below. No back pain.

Is this something or nothing? Thanks.

That's not a BH, they don't hurt and there's no pressure with them, just a tightening.

Have you tried having a bath? This can often help speed things up or slow them down.

fifitot · 11/07/2010 20:47

Thanks for reply. Will def try a bath. TBH if it is labour, need to hold off til morning so can sort DDs childcare out! Though of course nothing I can do about it really.

I didn't realise BHs don't hurt.

They shouldn't hurt, they are just practice contractions (tightenings)

I went into premature labour (it stopped thank goodness), the contractions in normal labour are the same as being induced (little monkey was induced as he changed his mind and decided to stay there), when you are induced there's no build up though, it's 0-100 in 5 minutes. Mother's normally have diarrhoea in the early stages of labour as their body's preparing itself. A bath will help.

I hope all is OK.

Sounds like labour to me.

Start thinking about childcare now! My labours started like this and got so painful I was heading to hospital witin a few hours.

DrivenToDistraction · 11/07/2010 20:56

It sounds like the start of labour to me. TBH, if you need to wait until morning then it's pretty much gaurenteed to be.

fifitot · 11/07/2010 21:12

Thanks. Got a bit of lower back pain now. Sounds like it might be it.

Take your time. Do you have some childcare sorted just incase?

fifitot · 11/07/2010 22:11

Yes - got a mate who in an emergency will come round while I await the arrival of my mum who will need to drive down.

Had a nice bath, things eased off a little bit so will just wait and see. Hopefully I can get to morning now.

Will report back if any news!

Try and get some sleep.

Good luck!

Here's wishing you a quick, easy and enjoyable birth.

haribomum · 11/07/2010 23:17

sounds like labour to me!
my advice would be to keep as upright as possible for baby to be in the optimum birthing position and gravity to help!

wishing you a very positive and beautiful birth!

DrivenToDistraction · 11/07/2010 23:27

But early labour can go ob for aaages and it's lateish.

IME best to eat then sleep while you can and be as upright and active as possible once labour wakes you. If this had started in the night you'd heve slep through quite a bit...

fifitot · 12/07/2010 07:52

No real developments yet. Still irregular crampy pains and a tiny bit of fluid loss. Am following your advice and just getting on with the day!

lets hope this doesn't drag on and on............

Missed your post! Hope your doing OK, maybe you've even met your DC by now

fifitot · 14/07/2010 15:43

Hello! Just quick catch up!

Yes labour had started on Sunday. In established labour on Monday lunchtime. 5 and half hours later, baby arrived! Felt like longer of course but had a nice active birth.

Thanks for all your comments - really useful.
