Supporting a 17 year old with binge eating disorder

My 17yr old was recently diagnosed with a binge eating disorder. How can I help support her in the best way possible? Would love to know how others are navigating this. Every thing I read online says bland things like “encourage healthy eating habits” but how do I do this without causing the shame that makes her binge in secret? It feels like a perfect catch 22. Any advice or experience would be amazing. Thanks.

It’s a horrible disorder and I hope that she is being offered treatment from the Eating Disorders Service but the usual advice is to never diet or restrict - it makes the BED worse and to have three meals a day with a snack in between. There is a good podcast called Brain Over Binge too.
Best wishes.

I tried to edit the above unsuccessfully.🤷‍♀️
The treatment usually includes Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to help manage the feelings that lead to bingeing and I would ask the ED service for advice from a Binge Eating informed dietician who can give practical advice re nutrition.
Sending hugs to both of you x

Thanks so much for this - she is getting support via our local ED service, but we’re just at the start of it and it’s overwhelming all round. Will definitely listen to that podcast and will ask service for dietician advice as didn’t realise that was an option. Huge learning curve. Thank you x
