Hi there, just wondering if anyone’s children (aged 12) struggle with anxiety?
It would appear ds is and I am waiting to hear back from the gp on the next steps.
Just looking for support if any is around!

Is it his imagination causing anxiety?

Proseccoismyfriend · 16/09/2025 14:24

Thank you for replying. Really not sure, he doesn’t know and doesn’t understand why he feels this way so it’s very difficult to know how to help him. I just don’t want a little issue becoming a larger problem if left untreated/supported.

Is he neurodivergent? Or have there been any stressors in his life? How has he settled into big school?

Anxiety is worrying about the future. Child therapy can help. Can you afford to go private?

I worked in child mental health services until about 6 years ago, so pre lockdown. Unfortunately the incidence of anxiety and depression in primary school aged children was becoming an epidemic. I was trained in a form of CBT called LIAM which had some good results. Try and find some online resources as a CAHMS referral takes forever to secure.

My Ds 11 really suffers with anxiety, it crept up so slowly but now people like his swim coach have noticed snd pulled me aside. It’s hard to know what is causing it , it seems like lots of children are feeling the same way.

Approximately 500 children are referred to CAMHS for anxiety every day. If your DC struggles to name his feelings, he might be neurodivergent. Can you afford to go private?

He isn’t neurodivergent but is dyslexic, not sure if that needs to be considered. Private would be an option as I can only imagine what the waiting lists are like for camhs. Were a 3 tiered school system so no changes there but high school is only a year away, it just seems so sad that children seem to have all these worries instead of just being kids and enjoying themselves

I imagine his dyslexia plays a big part in it, especially as he gets older, the gap between him and his peers will become more noticeable to him, even if he doesn’t fully realise it. He will have to work so much harder than others, which will zap his energy, burn him out, make him slower than others. All this will have an impact on him. I hope he gets help soon 💐

Did your DC do SATs? Dyslexia is anxiety-inducing. Is he getting academic pressure from any source?

And I would bet that the overwhelming majority have their referral rejected.
