Hello,
I'm in search of a female therapist for my 17 yo - recurrent self-harm, giving up on CAMHS so looking for private counselling now. London SW area (Clapham/Battersea). Would be hugely grateful for any tips, suggestions, recommendations... Internet searches are quite daunting, so many websites out there. Thank you so much!

Have a look on Psychology Today. Most if not all the therapists on there offer a free 15 minute consultation, so I would pick two or three that you think might work, and have a consultation with each, with your daughter there, and see which one she feels most comfortable with. Sarah Bishop, in Richmond/Twickenham. I know it’s a tad far but she’s absolutely amazing!

I'd stay aways from private listings and Google, and only use the searches (usually poor quality websites though) for registration bodies.

Try the ACP website for regulated psychotherapists https://childpsychotherapy.org.uk/ They can work with children up to 25 years old (important if your child is already 17)

If you want a counsellor (talking therapy, I think a diploma?) try the BACP website (they usually list their areas of expertise, e.g. teens).

For a clinical psychologist (so trained to doctoral standard, offer a variety of models including CBT, act, cft and others) then look on the BABCP or HCPC register (they won't all work privately though, so you could try googling for private practices in your local area and then always check they are registered - definitely on HCPC which is their licensing body, BABCP is a CBT licensing body and not compulsory for them).

There is a price difference - counsellors usually £60ish, clinical psychologists will be closer to £100. Usually offer a free call to get a sense of you/the client and if they can help, and may refer on if they feel there is someone better suited to help.
