DS1 /arms / job

I’ve name changed for this as I don’t want this post to be associated with my usual name, but I’ve been on here a very long time - eating fatballs, cutted up pear etc.
DS1 is 16. He is ND and also has depression and anxiety. He sees a psychiatrist through camhs and is on fluoxetine.
We have a generally good relationship and he has been open with me about his self harm. I’ve seen his arms and bought him plasters and antiseptic wipes etc.
He cut quite badly today and I’ve patched him up. The big issue is that he recently started a kitchen assistant job and has got on really well. He’s starting college to do catering after the summer. He has to have bare arms for work.
His arms are a mess and he’s worried about work. I’ve suggested that I bandage him tomorrow and that he speaks to his head chef when he gets and explains, but also reminds him that he is hardworking and reliable.
I’m a manager and I know that in my industry we would be supportive but I also know hospitality can be hard!
I suppose I’m just looking for thoughts - apologies for the essay!

I'm so sorry this must be very worrying.

Does he genuinely enjoy the kitchen job? It hasn't contributed to what he's going through?

If he still honestly wants to work there, I'd suggest he wears a skin tight long sleeve top under his kitchen uniform, and say he has to "for medical reasons" (not a lie really).

I wouldn't be sharing unnecessary details with the other staff. They might well be very gossipy which wouldn't be good for his MH

Skin tight so it's not a hygiene or H+S issue (can't flap into the food)

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It is really upsetting but I try not to let him see that.
No, he is enjoying the job and the money! It's a really lovely place with no shouting.
I think the skin tight top is a good idea - he does have some under armour stuff from playing football.

In my (admittedly limited) experience of hospitality, he’s very unlikely to be the only person in the kitchen with self-harm scars. It’s a good idea to speak to the head chef and see in he can wear tight coverings (you can probably get arm “leggings” (armings?) from a sports shop. Golfers often wear them with short sleeved shirts to keep the sun off. Good luck to your son. Hope he enjoys college.
