Hi everyone please share your thoughts! Worried mother here .
son 40months old had his first speech and language appointment.
the therapist has told me she will be putting referals to OT (occupational therapy) & pediatrician. This is first time she met him, I see her worries too.
has anyone been in this situation would this mean she is highly concerned for him? And how likely are the referrals to be accepted? Can they be declined. Waiting for his report.
PLEASE ANYONE GIVE EXPERIENCE OF ANYTHING LIKE THIS OR SIMILAR SITUATION.
thank you

What were her concerns? Your son is almost 4? Is he at school or nursery? Do they have any concerns?

Sunshineclouds11 · 07/06/2024 19:16

What setting is he in?

What are the concerns?

Sunnysummer24 · 07/06/2024 19:19

3yr and 4 months.

It will all depends on what her concerns are? Does he attend nursery yet?

Do you think he has delays in some areas?

Nursery.
ive been begging the senco for advice and referrals and she told me it’s my parenting .
she told me there are no concerns and even for his speech that’s it is all expected and that his speech isn’t delayed either so basically she’s been fobbing me off

What? That is shocking, you need to get him moved as nursery need to be working with you and professionals to put in place what he needs.

I know how this feels but honestly you need to change your mindset. From experience I stopped taking him out as I was so scared of him kicking off in public. I had a women say something to me once and I burst out crying.
My HV said to me, people naturally look if something happens it's not always in a judging way.
Tell them to fuck off in your head.

My son is on the spectrum and at first when the referrals and talks about it I was petrified.
What you need to know is, a diagnosis is just that. He would get help regardless.
From my own experience, let this digest, and read up on it. The more I learnt about it the more I felt better and it helped for ways to help him cope and to manage him.

hiredandsqueak · 07/06/2024 19:39

Yes son was referred to paediatrics on first appointment with SALT. She actually asked GP to refer and when he said he wouldn't she did it herself. Son has autism, I suspected before the appointment with SALT anyway.

Cannot thank you enough for sharing your thoughts with me .
do you think this will get the ball rolling now to have him assessed ?
I want to change his nursery but he seems sooo happy there so I’m worried he will get distressed else where?
I want to make sure he has full support and a ehcp as he needs 1-1 at all times the therapist also said this child should be getting 1-1 support in school too .

Yes 100% for the ball rolling. Accept any referrals and help they offer as this is all in his best interests.
Speak to your HV for some advise regarding changing nursery but you really do need them on board with you.
We've just applied for an EHCP, nursery should be doing this, you can actually also do it yourself.
What has nursery said since SALT has been out? Did they visit him in nursery?

I’m a little confused if it’s not a private nursery or a school nursery. Is it a stand a lone LEA nursery?

Do they have a qualifed early years teacher?

I told the salt how the senco been saying it’s my parenting and that’ there are no concerns.
she told me she will be making meetings with them and that making them aware of my sons needs and differences .

we only had his first referral yesterday so so far nothing has changed.
health visitors come around every month or so because I’ve been pestering them for the past year with concerns and begging for support.
I will explain about moving nursery’s to see her thoughts .
just to make you aware hv already made referral to peds but they were declined 2 weeks ago.
question is can they decline the one from salt saying it’s unnecessary??

Sunshineclouds11 · 07/06/2024 19:57

Pleased SALT is going to speak to nursery. This may very well change their stance on it, well it should atleast so fingers crossed they take it seriously now.

I've never heard of one being declined tbh, if listing all the concerns I can't see how they can say it's unnecessary.

So it’s just a nursery I don’t pay for it so I assume it’s not private. However there is a school attached to the building if that makes it any better? X
They do have a senco but senco has been refusing to put any effort into working with me to get things going for my son?
she says it is my parenting because once I gave him a bike back so she thinks I’m not consistent with my boundaries.

Ugh I’m so relived I will be telling the nursery after salt speaking to them that if they are not willing to support me for my son and for ehcp I will be removing him.
i can’t help but think because im a young parent and because they have been directly saying to my face that its my parenting they deliberately chose to ignore these concerns?
ive been begging them for over 6 months

Did he have any problems at birth, does he have any differences in his physical appearance at all? Has he always missed milestones or did he just sort of slow down? Hopefully community paediatrics will accept the SALTs referral, I'm assuming he can hear ok and all that has been checked out? If more than one professional hs concerns then people really need to start listening to you. I wonder whether HV was too specific and asked for a particular assessment pathway which paeds thought he was too young for - I would just be looking for a general developmental assessment looking at all areas.

and well hv told me it was just a referral with all concerns on it but she told me that she would be re doing it before I met the salt as she asked me if there was any mental health problems in family and sadly both asd ,Schizophrenia,
adhd run down many members of my dads side and because she’s seen how we are at home she told me she will re do it with better detail?

Can people pay for that nursery? If yes, it’s a private nursery. They may not have a qualified teacher or be experienced enough.

smartiecake · 07/06/2024 20:32

He sounds similar to my youngest son, who was diagnosed with autism aged 3yrs 6 months. The SALT was the first person to tell me he had autism a few months before his diagnosis. I was absolutely devastated at the time. He went to a private nursery and they didn't raise any concerns but as soon as he started at nursery attached to a school they instantly raised concerns and got their senco involved and we started gathering the paperwork to apply for an EHCP.

Good luck OP it is a hard road to go down, but your son will always be your lovely boy and I'm sure he won't be refused those assessments. Its a step towards identifying his needs and what support he will need going forward.
