My Yr 6 er is heading to high school after the summer and finally has been granted his EHCP thanks to the tireless efforts of his teachers . 🙂. How has it helped in your lives? TIA

Mine got her EHCP in y12 having missed all of y11.
. it enabled her to stay in college for 2 years
. it enabled flexibility of timetable to help her succeed in college
. it is enabling her to possibly return to college in Sept having had a 'gap year'

... DD being in college gave me some of my life back.

It didn't. My daughter hasn't been to school for 2 years despite having a ehcp not worth the paper it's written on

It acted as the key to unlock a SEN school; the school itself has been amazing and life changing for us. The EHCP is rubbish and has no other benefit to us than granting access to the school, who then put in place support above and beyond what the EHCP dictates.

I agree that it was having the EHCP rather than its content that made the difference for DD.

I have 2 DC with EHCPs (one with EOTAS, one currently in Ms but will be EOTAS when the LA finalise amendments following tribunal). Their EHCPs mean their needs are met which improves life for them but also for the whole house. They receive a significant amount support they wouldn’t otherwise receive which would well beyond our ability to fund ourselves.

When is the next AR due? If not soon have you requested an early review? Following that you will be able to appeal. If school is inappropriate you could look at EOTAS.

In the meantime, the LA has a duty to ensure DD receives anything detailed, specified and quantified in F (if there is anything) under s42 CAFA 2014. If DD is CSA they also have a duty to ensure DD receives a suitable full-time education under s19 of the Education Act 1996. IPSEA has model letters you can use to request these. If that doesn’t work, email the Director of Children’s Services threatening JR. Then, if that doesn’t work you need a pre-action letter. SOSSEN can help with that but there is a long wait so you may want to look elsewhere if a pre-action letter is required.

Oh wow! I hadn't checked replies and so glad to hear other parents experiences of them both positive and negative.

I am hoping to secure SN transport to school through it as me and my husband work full time and my son waiting next to a road for a bus is terrifying! I also want him to get some therapy for his crippling OCD.

We've already been referred to CAHMS and nothing came of that .

Come September we are trying for a regular high school but since he can't focus or sit for his SATS I have mixed hopes. He has exactly average learning potential (which has meant the EHCP. took ages) but can rarely apply due to profound for want of a better work ADHD. Also some ASD in there but never diagnosed.

If therapies are required they should be in section F of the EHCP. If they aren’t and the EHCP has just been finalised you will be able to appeal. If you appeal and don’t already have sufficient evidence you will need to look at independent assessments.

Did you request an assessment by a clinical psychologist &/or psychiatrist during the EHCNA?
