Child mental health

Is there any benefit to "getting your child on the system"?

DD(14) has had anxiety and EBSA on and off for nearly a year. Although it's been really hard, I'm aware that CAMHS are so stretched that she wouldn't meet their criteria. We've been fortunate in that we've been able to get her some private therapy/psychology input (which is horrendously expensive but been just about possible). She's gradually getting better. We haven't even really bothered with the GP. Would there be any benefit (or the opposite...?) in her mental health struggles being "on the record", though?
TIA

NB She's actually had blood tests and physical exams for other reasons, and it's all been fine, so I don't see much benefit in checking the mental health stuff out with a GP from a physical perspective.

Potential benefits:
. access to meds
. 'evidence of need' in case it worsens and you need an EHCP for her for education
. on waiting list for CAMHS, which you can always turn down if you get to the top of the queue

Sounds like you are managing fine though. Smile

Yes, DD saw a private psychiatrist and therapist after camhs assessed her as “just stressed” (ie not functioning at all but prob wouldn’t kill herself in the short term). We kept the GP in the loop, who was copied into psych updates. Once she was on meds and stabilised, we got her meds through the GP which was a lot cheaper (well, free).

Thanks @Vinniepolis . I'll certainly keep this in mind if we have to go down a medication route at any point.
