How to get GP to prescribe meds for 16 yr old

Won't go into the details but dc, 16, is VERY anxious and depressed - this has been going on for years. Two sessions with CAMHs achieved a tiny amount but kicked out when much more help was still needed. We saw a mental health person at the GPs today, who basically agreed, re-referred to CAMHs but with the caveat there will be a year wait minimum. We discussed anti-anxiety meds and she agreed they sounded like a good idea, as we've tried therapy and she's just texted to say she's talked to the GP about it and we can discuss in an appointment we have tomorrow.

What I'd love advice on is how do I convince the GP if she's reluctant to prescribe. DC CANNOT continue like this. I would go private but obviously would rather not and all this is so slow to put into practice.

@ForeverbyJudyBlume Just saw this.

Your GP should be able to prescribe Propranolol for anxiety which will help a bit.
However as an under 18 I think you will need a consultant psychiatrist if you want anti depressants.

When DD's MH collapsed at the start of Covid eventually getting onto anti depressants (Fluoxetine) was a real game changer as it gave her the energy to cope with therapy. We went private. if you can, I would. First appt was ~£350, follow ups ~£250 a pop.

If your DC isn't actively self harming I'd be surprised if they get to the to of the CAMHS waitlist before they turn 18. DD didn't.

If GP refuses, get a second opinion from another GP.
GP’s can prescribe propranolol and even sertraline, fluxotine and other SSRI’s o BCE aged 16 and above as long as patient has agreed to some form of talking therapy as well
