ADHD help

My 11 DS is convinced he has ADHD and I’m not sure how to help him. He was tested years ago, when he was 6/7 and was found to be borderline. The consultant recommended he see an educational psychologist but the school said they didn’t have funding as his needs weren’t great enough.

He spent years ‘working towards’ at primary school but left year six with ‘meeting expectations’ following the SATS.

He’s now at senior school, and although his in class assessments are all fine and his effort is all marked as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ he keeps googling ADHD as he’s struggling with the class dynamics.

He finds school too noisy, too busy and he prefers to sit alone as otherwise in class he gets distracted. He says he really struggles to focus.

I’m torn as to what to do. Should we get a private assessment for him? My thoughts are that his struggles aren’t bad enough to need medication so even if he did have a diagnosis then the main thing we could do to help is have coping strategies in place which is what we try to do now.

He is able to focus at karate and football.

I wish I’d pressed for a proper assessment for my dc, although the situation was a bit different as he later decided he didn’t want a diagnosis. It would have been helpful in understanding what was going on for him and making sure he had some support at school rather than just being seen as a disappointment by them.

Thanks for your reply, I think you're right in that knowing what we are dealing with would be helpful so will push the assessment aspect I think.
