DD overdose

My DD 21 took an overdose two days ago. She's okay now physically (overdosed on paracetamol), although it was touch and go. She's now in a small emergency mental health facility (a converted house which is run by medical professionals but in a homey environment). I hesitated to post on here because I feel very guilty and sad plus so many other confusing feelings like anger and betrayal. But I have literally no one else to talk to. I'm a single parent and DD lives with me because she has epilepsy. We don't live in the UK but are UK citizens.

I'm sorry this has happened to your family op. I'm sure it's very worrying but it's very positive that your dd is now getting (hopefully) the help she needs. Your feelings are perfectly natural and it's normal to feel lots of different conflicting things at once. Is there any support you could get for yourself like counselling etc so you have a listening ear and a way to protect your own resilience while you support her? You deserve to have support with something so painful too. I hope she gets much better and this is a turning point for her towards much better things.

No, there isn't really anyone else. I can't tell my friends, I don't have any siblings, her father's an abusive twat and I haven't spoken to him in years. Mental health support is woefully inadequate here, as is almost all healthcare since Covid.

So sorry Lost. I'm still sleeping with keys under my pillow since dd15s OD. We have enough pills to fell an elephant due to OHs medical issues and all have to be under lock and key as she's impulsive so could just suddenly decide to do it again. Recommend the book "never let go" by Suzanne alderson, runs parenting mental health and has fb group of same name.

I'm very glad and grateful that DD is being looked after but she says she's ready to come home tomorrow and that terrifies me. I was completely blindsided by her overdose - absolutely did not see it coming. I knew she was stressed over university and trying to get over a breakup (which happened a few months ago) but never this!

Oh @Flanjango! I'm so sorry. That must be incredibly scary. Does your DD have support?

She's been under camhs for a while now. Sadly talking therapy not helping and they blame either her autism or school for her issues. She's depressed!

Must have been a serious attempt. They sent my dd home hours later telling us to remove all sharps, meds and ligatures from her reach. It was terrifying

lostandcold · 14/11/2022 00:41

Yes, I guess it was a serious attempt but now she's downplaying it. Saying she just felt overwhelmed. I don't feel like I can trust what she tells me now, which is horrible. Is your DD on meds? Mine is but she kept "forgetting" to take them, even though she's very diligent about taking her anti seizure meds. I'm so confused.
