I'm just dealing with a very difficult 7 year old and was wondering if something might be wrong or if im thinking too much into it..

My 7, near 8 year old has been going through a hard time lately. She has always been very particular to the point that she gets extremely distressed when things don't work the way she planned it. She's very obsessive about things. Lately she has been flying into rages when this happens or if she is sad/too happy/annoyed it all boils out into a rage, I have always put her moods and tantrums down to being over stimulated but its just got to a new level lately. Shes fidgety, she can't sit still, she talks constantly, she can't deal if my attention is on something or someone else when she feels it should be on her, she goes through phases where she wakes at 4/5 o clock every morning for weeks. She has no concentration unless it is something she is really interested in. She's impulsively reacts to situations without a second thought. She has issues with the way clothes feel and will only wear certain things. I'm just at a point where i am unsure what to do.

Any advice is appreciated x

She does sound like a mixture of my two (19year old ASD and just about to be diagnosed ADHD) and 15year old ASD (and probably ADHD). My two were only diagnosed 18 months ago so we had no idea when they were younger but looking back the signs were there. Both of mine had breakdowns over the last two years, so yes, please investigate. It is only now that I am beginning to understand what they can't manage and why. Getting through secondary school has been tough, although my eldest got through his GCSEs before breaking down. I know the NHS mental health system is broken but better to get a head start on it. If you can afford it go private - we managed to get through the process relatively quickly and acted upon trying to help them as soon as we realised what was needed - even then it has been a difficult few years. When they were younger we were always told they 'would grow out of it', but obviously they didn't - there was a reason for their behaviour and it is only now that we can understand it and help them.

Unfortunately, we have been told private assessments cannot be supported by the local authority we are in. Please check this first OP before going privately.

I can see a mix of both asd with things like the not liking feel of clothes which can be a sensory problem she is having, talking about things only she's interested in, etc and adhd with the fidgeting and talking etc. If this is the case, the way she is acting may be her way of dealing with things that she's unsure of herself. She may not realise she acts a certain way. If you haven't already I'd speak with the school and raise your concerns just say what you have here and see if she does any of those things at school or if there is anything the teachers have seen. Then I'd go to the gp to see if he can refer you to the right professionals for some tests. Even write a few things down and see I'd you can see any triggers for her. The more info you have the better. I have seen there is a waiting list in some areas for places such as camhs so you'll need to look into your area specifically. Good luck op I really hope you get some answers and support
