5yo late for school because of nausea/vomiting from anxiety

My 5yo DD started school yesterday, she has a condition that causes disturbed sleep and severe anxiety. Last night she was so unsettled, waking frequently and when I woke her this morning at 7.15am she was exhausted (as am I!) She was then slightly sick (mainly dry heaving and phlegm) which she often is from anxiety, normal for her. However because she was so tired and nervous we were a few mins late for school - as we were meant to be leaving she said she felt sick again and sat with a bowl. Anyone else late for school because of anxiety? I feel awful she was late on only her second day and dreading school mornings. She was like this on nursery mornings but only went 2 days a week, and it didn't matter if she was a few minutes late for nursery.

My DS was / is the same. Speak to the school senco to let them know what is happening. DS's school were excellent and very supportive.

How old is your DS? DD has a 1:1 and they are aware of her anxiety (she was sick once at school yesterday when she got upset), I just worry it's going to be a regular things and I feel really bad!

I’m sure that if they’re aware, they won’t mind in the slightest.
We have children who can’t manage a full day or can’t manage the crowd of the start so go in a bit later. It’s fine. Smile

It's not uncommon OP. I think whatever you don't make school negotiable and do every thing to get her there on time. Talk to the teacher and your dd's TA and see if they have any suggestions, this won't be the first time they've had anxious children. Do you drive to school or walk? I think of you walk then fresh air can help and if you drive then I'd be inclined to let her have a bowl in the car.

It's very hard, hope you get a better night tonight x

DS is 9 now.

What helps....the same routine day in day out. Same journey, same route, same morning routine before we leave the house.

It does get better, not brilliant, but definitely better.

Major flash points, starting a new term as his routine has changed over the break. It gets better gradually over the coming weeks of term.

Don't let her see you worrying about it. Reassure her that it's fine to take her time and make sure she knows it's just routine. No big deal.

Thank you for the reassuring replies. She's been fine at school today, no anxious moments at all, I don't think being tired this morning helped either.
