Hi hoping someone can help me my 17 year old son is suffering with mental health issues. We have been to the GP been referred to CAMHS. Very long waiting list was thinking going private to get him assessed quickly as he is getting worse each day . Been A&E with him as he tried to self harm to be told by CAMHS to go home keep him safe until appointment comes through. Been told this could be 8 to 9 months he turns 18 in February. So looking like he won't be seen by CAMHS. I'm at a loss of what to do to help him I am in the Nottinghamshire area if anyone can help and recommend someone to assess him.

We went through The Priory to get help for DD, only because I know it is large with a good reputation and I had no idea how to find someone otherwise.
It cost ~£350 for initial assessment and ~£220 for every follow up though, so not cheap.

I second what @TeenMinusTests has said if you can afford it find a private psychiatrist who can prescribe. We had crisis with DD earlier in the year and went this path as I just couldn’t wait for CAMHS.
We have got so much further than we would have waiting and we are trying a couple of medications and having psychotherapy.
It’s very hard sorting it all and pushing on through but it’s worth it. The endless waiting it Terrible especially When you consider how long the teen has probably coped alone before you see the outcome it’s never a case of this just happening today as it were.
I’m so pro modern medication honestly why suffer if 6 months on antidepressants can get people through a rough patch or help them enough so they can engage with talking therapy.
I just googled psychiatrists locally and researched their background and then emailed 3.

We got a video appointment through Psychiatry Online for my now 16yo daughter, after CAMHS dismissed her breakdown at school as “just stress”. (She had hallucinations and was talking to people who weren’t there - this was after a long period of self harming etc, in which she was assessed by CAMHS but again - no help was offered.) I’m sure seeing someone in person is better, but the videocalls got us through the crisis and got her onto the right meds which have made a world of difference. I think it was £350 for the initial call and then between £175-£225 for follow-ups depending on the length. Her next call with her psychiatrist is in 6 months. She also sees a therapist twice a month that I found through the BACP website I think. So yes, it does add up to being rather expensive unfortunately.
