Hello, any advice for this would be really helpful for me please. My 8 year old DS has been playing football for years. He loves playing but he does have temper issues. His team had a friendly away game today, the referee was completely biased towards his boys which happens a lot but fouls were happening again and again. He eventually got so wound up and threw the ball at the head of the boy who fouled him. He was then subbed off and he spent the rest of the game sulking and having a tantrum on the sidelines. He wouldn't join in with the after-game chat with his teammates and the coach, and then refused to do penalties (for fun). I've just had a WhatsApp message from his coach, who I really get on with, about him having a two match ban because of his behaviour over the last few weeks, and that if he continues he will be asked to leave the team. My son is obviously devastated and won't talk to us. Football is his life and his best friends are in his team. Has anyone got any ideas about what I could do to help him? I want to find about any support network you could point us towards maybe? Thank you.

Hi op, my eldest was like this at that age. If they were losing he would lash out at his team mates, verbally. Saying things like "its your fault", "what a rubbish pass" . None of it true, just his anger. He would also become "injured" in tournaments if they were losing with no hope of winning. He carried on like this until he was about 13/14, just his personality. He was short tempered generally. He was a very good player as well and had trials at clubs etc and many trophies.

I have no advice i am afraid, just adhere to the suspensions and maybe he will start to learn to calm his temper. My son was never suspended but often spoken to by coach/manager and upset his friends. My son eventually gave football up at 16, as he couldn't be bothered to train all the time and left a big club as a result. 2 of his little Sat club team mates also left big clubs at same age and time, again good players but lost interest . They all 3 were naturally gifted exceptional players but all lost interest in the end and training was hard for apprentices , as was the boss!

Let him sit his suspension out and see how it goes from there. He may lose interest totally once girls and socials come on the scene as he gets older. If he wants a career in football he will need to learn to curb his temper and a suspension now may be what he needs. Don't worry too much OP, its about their passion for the game and wanting to win. His coaches will do what they feel right to manage him.
