Hi

My 15yo DD has recently been very depressed and subsequently been diagnosed with POCD. Before she could start medication, she was sent for routine urine and bloods. She was recalled for another blood test as she has raised prolactin. I have looked this up and one cause could be pregnancy. I have tried to find out from the GP if the routine urine test would have checked this? I don't want to freak my daughter out by asking her. She has also been extremely tired, no appetite etc. Does anyone know if a routine test would check for pregnancy?

Sorry I should have added that the GP won't disclose without her consent but I don't want to worry her.

Surely if they'd tested her for pregnancy and it was positive, they wouldn't be recalling her for more tests, as that would explain the raised prolactin?

My daughter has high prolactin. It's linked to the pituitary gland. She went for an mri scan and the gland is slightly enlarged. She takes tablets. It's not serious and may not be permanent. Think it can affect mood especially when teenage hormones are also considered.

thank you ! I had not thought of that!

I’d think it’d be more likely to be due to an endocrine issue.

that's interesting. I've looked it up and could be linked to some other symptoms she has. I guess I'll see what the GP says when the results come back, thank you.

@dropyoursword thank you - i asked for her thyroid to be tested before. this was just a routine test and O just suddenly had this panic that she could be pregnant.

Hi @cockerpoomum - as far as I can recall, I don’t think the thyroid has anything to do with prolactin. I think it’s from the anterior pituitary. But your GP would definitely know!

@dropyoursword - ah i just looked up endocrine and it came up with that amongst others. I am being impatient.. i'll wait for the results on Monday. I just had an immediate panic that she was pregnant and not telling me!
