Hi all
Our dd15 , after giving up on CAmhs has been given a diagnosis of anxiety/depression and the consultant psychiatrist days she is showing signs of borderline personality disorder. She has been prescribed Prozac. Any advice or shared experiences greatly appreciated as it's quite scary but my dh and I have vowed to keep our heads. It's been a very hard year with her. Little nervous about Prozac but also need to trust doctor and she is extremely low. They are then going to start DPT therapy.
Going privately was where we eventually felt we got some kind of help. Thanks all in advance

Hi OP, I don’t really have any advice but just wanted to say I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be, and with covid and bloody lockdown on top of everything else it’s understandable you’ve snapped. Is there anyone you can talk to IRL - or a mental health helpline, just to offload?

I hope there are some other posters who have experience of their children being in mental health units who can help. Perhaps you should start a new topic with that as the heading? Big hugs xxx

Please remember you are not alone. Find someone that can be there for you, when needed. We have had a similarly tough time with our daughter for the last two years. Attended Camhs & a suicide charity - so have been through CBT for depression, anxiety. Trialled Prozac, which did suit and saw us in via A&E. (if you can afford a pharmacological test, save yourself the roulette of trialing medications that will not suit).
However, one thing that I have learnt is that no one knows your child better than you do, trust your gut. We started a mood chart, she colour plotted when the suicidal thoughts came up, low days, good days, triggers, as well as her periods. This spotted a hormonal aspect. If your DDs are experiencing extreme periods, absent for long periods, severe pain, it is worth pushing to see if Poly Cystic Ovaries are involved. Our daughter has been diagnosed with this and we tried Dianette, Yaz and depression spiralled. She is extremely hormone & drug sensitive. A lot of research later and a brilliant GP willing to listen and let us trial Metformin - this has been transformative with a contraceptive called Zoely. It contains natural estrogen and we take less breaks. For days when the underlying hormones cause issues, which are now down to less than 4 a month, we use 5HTP - half a tablet. It seems to knock the feelings away.
I was ready to have our child taken as an in-patient at one stage, and now we are moving out of the hell and can see her emerging. So do check thyroid, scan ovaries etc as many illnesses can cause depression, anxiety etc. And remember to look after yourselves. The impact on the family can not be underestimated. Hopefully this helps someone else. x

Just had an awful conversation with CAMHS came on here in desperation and here is such a wonderful thread with lots of info, but how is your DD now OP, things sounded pretty tough in your last post in May? Is our DD back home? Flowers to you, I can only imagine how you feel.

I suspect my DD has BPD, but at 17 and after 2 years with CAMHS we are getting nowhere, all they are interested in is the cheapest and quickest solution - I just said I was not happy with things and the therapist said "so what you are saying is that you want her discharged" - what they've been angling for all along. We did have a private psychologist and psychiatrist before CAMHS and they were awful too!
