Anxiety and a ten year old

Hi I’m having so difficultly with my dd. She’s ten and out of the blue she started to have a lot of anxiety issues.

A couple of years ago she was very badly bullied. The bully left but the damage was done to my dd. I moved her to a different school and she’s been happy there but hasn’t made any close friends. Just after she moved schools my dh worked in the Middle East for a number of months, dd was distraught, it was very tough on us all. He’s back now but works away in the week. She misses him. On top of this she’s now in the throws of puberty.

Recently she’s started to wash her hands excessively-after touching a chair, even getting up in the night to wash. Her hands are raw Sad. She’s also started telling me she’s scared of saying things inappropriate such as shouting offensive language in school.

I should also say I have a 14 year old ds with asd.

I think it’s ocd that dd has and I have taken her to our GP. Our GP was really sympathetic and has suggested apps for dd, etc but said there’s not much else available for dds age group. I spoke to my GP about whether dd has asd but she said she didn’t think so.

I’m so worried about dd, I just want to help her. I don’t know what to do next Sad

In our area you can self refer to cahms online. Have a look for your area and also speak to school.

My DD has anxiety but she's younger. We've been to cahms twice - they're ok - it's better than nothing and depending on who you get depends on how much you get out of it. There's a book called understanding your fears and worries that cahms would recommend you read. The waiting list is long so get the book now and it'll help you get ahead for when you see them. There's also an app called worry time which is very good but be careful that it's not overused or it'll defeat the purpose.

I'm afraid I don't know about the ocd side of things but school may be able to signpost you.

This helped our Dd diagnosed at 11 with ocd but I’m sure it started when she was 10. She had some CBT with a clinical psychologist we seen privately and all compulsions stopped after five sessions down from 26 different compulsions.

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. In addition to OCD please look into PANDAS/PANS - it is OCD etc brought on by an autoimmune reaction to a viral or bacterial infection. I'm sure it isn't but one of the signs is when OCD starts "out of the blue" .
