What happens at the pediatrition appointment?

Basically just that. My son is coming up to 3 and we are expecting a referral to see the pediatrition to come through around December time. He was referred by the health visitor to see a pediatrition, speech and language, dietician etc but nobody has really explained the process of this to me or really what they are looking for. I have taken him to speech and language who seemed concerned about his attention and lack of speech and have referred him for something else of the back of this.
Can anyone tell me what will happen at the pediatrition appointment? Will they just observe him? I feel a bit like ive been kept in the dark about something. They all seem to be hinting at something but none of them will just come out and say it.

They'll ask about your pregnancy and child's development. They'll probably weigh, do head circumference and height.
They may also do simple things like stacking bricks or pretend play with teapot etc.....
First appointment will be background info. Write yourself a timeline of his development.. I promise it will help you in the appointment!

The above was our experience too. Good luck, it can be very daunting but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Think of the first appointment as an information gathering process.
You'll likely be asked something along the lines of, 'what's been happening'?

Talk a bit about the health visitors referral and if there's any other concerns you want to add.

They'll weigh, height ask about sleeping, eating bowel movements and general development and likely to give your a child the once over.

It's like building a jigsaw puzzle in order to see the the bigger picture. They may be able to see that picture quickly or may need further investigations to help build a clearer picture.

Don't be disheartened if it's a short appointment or if you don't come away with answers. It's a process.

It could be they send you away to return in 3-6months to see if things have improved on there own. A lot of development worries settle in their own time but equally don't be afraid to ring the doctors secretary if you continue to have concerns in the interim to seeing them again.

Hope this makes sense and all the best

People in pardiatrics work to make you feel comfortable so don't worry.

The old cliche of writing down questions works. The paediatrician will welcome it because it'll give them an indication of your concerns (builds that picture to help see what the focus is and gives them a place to start)

Thank you everyone!
I feel a lot better about it now I know what to expect. Im going to write down everything and hope that makes it all clearer in my own head. Plus I will get brain blank the minute im asked a question otherwise. Heres hoping it goes as well as it can go!
