Hi everyone, my son is almost 15 months but doesn't say any words. He will sort of yell and make sounds and sometimes even makes tut tut sounds but no actual words. Should I be concerned? He doesn't really like playing with people even though we live in a full house (5 adults, 2 kids) but will watch tv and play by himself happily. He doesn't respond when his name is called but I don't think it's his hearing as when he hears the tv going he will run to the living room. Should I get him checked out?
TIA

I'm no expert and every child is different so shall mention the things that sprung to mind when reading this...

  • busy household; how much 1 on 1 time does he have?
  • is there quiet time where you sit face to face talking to each other with no distractions?
  • what food does he eat? Is it chewy enough to develop the muscles for speech?
I think a child needs to be 3 for speech therapy. The guidelines are 2 words at the age of 1. If you're concerned maybe speak to your HV or GP to put your mind at rest. Perhaps describe what a typical days looks like and people might post suggestions for you around things they've tried that you've maybe not thought of.

Thanks for your reply DD2017
Regarding the one on one time he is quite independent and won't really sit and play with anyone for a period of time.
With 5 adults in the house it's busy most of the time but as I mentioned earlier he is happy just to watch tv. Unfortunately my mother in law who looks after him while I'm at work uses tv as a distraction to feed him so he has gotten into that habit which I'm not for at all but he won't eat unless he's watching something (normally YouTube nursery rhymes and songs)
It is getting a bit worrying as he still doesn't respond to his name or seem to be making any effort into talking or communicating.

I have a 15MO and the only things she says are ‘oh no’, ‘dada’ and ‘ya’ (we think that means yes). From what I understand from daycare, there’s usually a big speech explosion at around 18 months hit before that kids tend to develop at their own pace. We’re complicated by being a bilingual household though... I might be a bit worried if he’s not responding at all to his name, can you ask your doctor/health visitor what they think? And the amount of tv doesn’t sound ideal, not judging as DD has paw patrol after dinner before bath most nights, but I might try to cut it down slightly and stop it during meal times.
