How do you decide what's 'normal teenage blues' vs more serious?

Are there particular warning signals or trigger points which should be a wake up call to get help/ refer to mental health experts etc?

DS is 15 and has a SpLD and anxiety. Seems really down at the moment, but won't talk much about it. He's worrying about GCSEs/ friendships/ his future etc.
But he is eating OK, sleeping OK, goes to the gym and I still hear him laughing with friends when he's playing games online, so DH & I are mostly considering it 'normal teenage hormonal' stuff which ebbs and flows depending on what sort of day he has had at school and how much homework he has.

How do you know if things are getting too much and they need help?It terrifies me when I hear stories of young people who sadly take their own lives and their parents say 'we had no idea'.
