Hi everyone, I'm currently 30 weeks pregnant and on the ssri citalopram. I know I shouldn't have, but I've been googling the risks to the baby and found some studies that say taking the anti/ depressants could cause autism. Just wondered if anyone had heard of this/experienced it. Many thanks xx

Link to these studies?

I have taken SSRIs through 4 pregnancies. All DC are fine.

I know numerous other mothers who are the same.

I've taken Citalopram during both of my pregnancies, plus breastfed DS1 til 17 months and am still BFing DS2 at 7 months.

The only risk that was ever quoted to me was a risk of a heart defect (risk went from something like one in 10,000 to two in 10,000 so hardly a major worry). I've never heard of the autism link. DS1 is 2.8y and (touch wood) seems fine.

The risk of untreated clinical depression in the mother is far greater to a foetus than Citalopram. Similarly, the advantages of breastfeeding far outweigh any minuscule risks from the drug.

Don't worry. Smile

Thank you! The studies I found were all quite small, but they just panicked me. If you google autism, pregnancy and ssri's articles couple up on the daily mail etc, but I'm sure they are just scaremongering. My consultant advised me to stay on them but I can't help but worry xxx

Daily Mail? Well there you go then.

Muslims, immigrants, people on benefits and women also probably cause autism according to them. Grin

Yes, you're right! Thank you, I feel better now. I really need to stay away from google... And the DM! X
