Old lady is laying ploppy eggs - what can I do?

She is our oldest, an Amber Link, and is now doing these ploppy things every couple of days - one on the doorstep today! She has layers' pellets, mixed corn, grit, crushed baked eggshells and free ranges for some of every day.

Is it just old age or is there a "cure"?

bump for egg layers anon!

How old is she? She could just be coming to the end of her egg laying career, her henopause if you will

CMOTdibbler · 17/03/2010 14:53

It could be old age (I love the henopause), but mostly it's lack of calcates in their diet. Snail shells are good, but lots of dark green plants to peck at are best, along with crushed sea shell (you can buy it at a feed store).

Buy some curly kale or dark cabbage and put it in the run - they'll love eating it too.

i assume you mean shell-less eggs?

it is an old age thing.

it is a lack of calcium, like CMOT says.

also try them with milk and grated cheese.
they go mad for it

you can buy kaolin form the chemists which can be added to the water in soft water areas.

make sure they're getting lots of grit (soil etc) and try to buy some poultry spice which you can sprinkle on their food.

Yes, shell-less eggs, some very bumpy. She seemed off-colour for a couple of days so I steamed and oiled her vent.

She is old, and she is getting plenty of grit/shell/greens - maybe it is the henopause? Love that term!

The others all are laying well, though.
