Please does anyone the rules and regs about selling extra eggs?I don't mean going into business, just selling a few boxes here and there. Is a sign on the gate "eggs for sale" ok? Or have I got to get date stamps, lion stamp etc.

as far as I know - you can not sell eggs for sterling/money

I have no idea whether mrs x donw the road would like to swap something with you, perhpas a cake or two?

I buy from chicken keepers and they arrive in either bought in boxes or second hand, and no stamp. Whether they should have is another thing though, but not something that bothers me

So long as you sell at your own gate in small numbers, it looks fairly straightforward. Once you move to selling off your own premises you need to register your 'flock' with the egg inspectorate, mark every egg with your producer number and use new packaging.

What I couln't find was any requirement for salmonella testing of the hens, which surprised me a bit. I guess since commercial layers began to be vaccinated, the pressure has come off a bit!

thanks for replys,so the risk would be if someone got ill from my eggs( or thought they did)I presumably wouldnt be protected.
Not sure if I want the worry then.but our eggs are delish, and at the moment we've got more than we can eat.
So, just a thought,if you give eggs away, then its up to the recipient to take the risk? Yes, I am a neurotic worrier! Most people I know would just stick a sign on the gate and not worry at all.

I would just crack one out onto a saucer, to be honest. If it stinks it is off and if the albumin is very watery it is just old. What I wouldn't do is just bash on and crack into a large bowl of expensive ingredients - just in case.

have just checked the DEFRA regs, and found out this:If you have less than 50 hens you can sell eggs at the gate, but you must put a best before date on the box,(&a few other details i cant remember.) also this site was helpful Poultry Pages

I sell eggs at the gate. I write in pencil the date of lay on each egg. I put a sticker on each box saying the eggs are good to eat for 4 weeks from date of lay. I think official advice is now eat within 3 weeks but I haven't changed my stickers and noone has ever complained and I've never been ill from eating a 4 week old egg.
