Feeling really guilty...

...we found one of our girls dead yesterday, and when we discussed it all, we realise - too late - that she had probably been egg-bound.
She was the best of the bunch, great layer and always busy. Kicking ourselves. We had an obviously egg-bound hen last summer, spotted it and sorted it quickly. She recovered quickly. But this time we were too slow. Miserable now.

Aw, sorry to hear it. Don't beat yourself up too much, they're very good at hiding their symptoms.

to read that. How do you know if a hen is egg bound?

CheeryCherry · 22/01/2010 18:25

They are very slow, quite still, look sad with eyes half closed, won't eat or drink or move about much. Definately not like their usual nosey, chirpy selves. We missed these signs this time, my DD had noticed she wasn't eating but we hadn't seen them much that day - it was barely light when we left for school and getting dark when we got home. Buried her today. Will be watching the others far more carefully from now on.

It's NOT that easy to spot though, is it? I feel for you.
