Pulled a crumpled egg out of her bottom...what now?

..this morning, after steaming her over hot water 5 mins then syringing cooking oil around the hole. (Thats what the 1950's book told me to do.)
She had suddenly gone downhill overnight (had been laying no problems most days and laid an egg yesterday) and this crumpled softish egg was half out this morning. She was clearly miserable.

What should I do now? It this the end for her? Will she get an infection/should I try to get an antibiotic? The others are all fine. She has laid for a year now, and belongs to my 10-y-o who is already worried for her.

Help!!

If the egg is out and you are sure it is completely intact, I would give her another day or so and see if she picks up. If the egg wasn't complete or she dosn't pick up, I would contact the vet.

Miraculous recovery so far - back out scratching with the others.

Poor hen- and poor you. I am in trauma just from reading your thread title on active convos!

Is this an ongoing problem?

I am not very good at the chicken thing as despite having bought them for exdp 3 years ago they still scare me but...

We had one that used to lay leathery, soft eggs. One day there would be a perfect egg next a soft egg. We were advised to increase the grit in the food and within a few weeks we never had another soft egg.

Might be worth a bit of research as it worked for us.

Neena28 Hi , I am in Leics too. Yes the ploppy egg is lack of calcium - we bake eggshells, crush them, and feed them back to the hens in the grit.

This one has been laying for over a year, so it was probably an extra large egg that got stuck. Hope it doesn't happen too often! Am now dosing her with e.v. olive oil each day now.

We did the eggshell thing too. They are so gross when they look like that though don't they?

Glad she is feeling better though.
