Thinking of geting an eglu cube - any opinions?

I currently have a big wooden hen house and its the biggest pain in the backside to get clean. Its got a pull out floor and I still find it really difficult with that. Plus its riddled with mite that I can't get rid of. Its only a year old but I've hated it since I got it.

So I'm thinking of gettign an eglu - are they easier to clean out? Do you still get mites? Any downsides to them? I currently have 7 chickens so sizewise should it be OK?

tia.

I've got a Cube (see profile).

It's a doddle to clean, especially now they've introduced plastic roosting bars as well. Jet wash - job done.

I douse mite powder around but haven't actually seen any - I use straw and Easibed in the poop trays, so the powder is just in case there's owt living in that.

With 7 birds, if you don't already have a run, you'll need to get the Cube with the run extension.

I love mine but Omlet products are the Marmite of the poultry world!

oooooooooh Cubes..... mmmmmm!!!!!

I've got an eglu but am already having cube dreams...!

bramblebooks · 27/01/2009 19:22

doodle, you've also got my fave look and cook cookbook (from my childhood, which left home with me and I still use!)

Doodle2U · 27/01/2009 19:34

Aye, it was me mother's cook book. I had to post a picture for another Mumsnetter who was trying to remember/find out what her Mum's old cookbook was called (her Mum had died).

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 27/01/2009 19:35

I've got a 20ftx10ft run, so just need the cube.

I second everything doodle says
They're lush!

Mooseheart · 27/01/2009 19:48

I wanna Eglu Cube!! They're so bloody expensive though! My chooks would love one of those - it would be like Claridges to them.

At the moment they are in the Bangkok Hilton.

bronze · 27/01/2009 19:59

I have a cube too and I love it.
I took it apart today for a spring clean. It was so nice knowing there was nothing horrible lurking.

Doodle we keep meeting. are you on omlet?

YouLukaBeautiful · 27/01/2009 20:00

They are the bees knees!

DH was very dubious about me spending sooo much on a chicken house until it arrived. He said that he then realised why they are sooo blardy expensive - they are the porsche of the chicken pen world so says he.
Phew said me.

bramblebooks · 27/01/2009 20:49

oooooh bronze, I do lurve those cubes! I'm on omlet - still learning who's who though.

I'm glad I spent money on my eglu rather than on a wooden house - but am going to have to start a cube fund (I'm really keen on getting blue egg hens).

Doodle2U · 27/01/2009 20:54

bronze, you probably have similar Mumsnet tastes to mine - swoop on, find the OK threads, deposit summat and get on with the rest of your day. Chicken Keepers is the only topic area I really spend quality time on!

Read Omlet website and forums but don't ever post. Prefer it here to be honest. Am very loyal to MN

alibubbles · 28/01/2009 09:01

I have a pink cube and 7 chooks, laying 7 eggs a day at the moment. I love my chickens, and surprisingly DS and DH loved looking after them when I was away, and let them free range everywhere!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 28/01/2009 10:02

Can someone tell me what the height is under the cube? Am wondering if my feed hopper will fit under it, I suspect it won't as its a big hopper.

At the moment its under my huge wooden hen house. If I can't keep it under the cube then what can I do to keep the pellets dry?

alibubbles · 28/01/2009 10:58

Hi, The height of the cube is 120cm, the cube itself is 70cm long, so tha gap must be 50cm.

i have my cube outside of my large pen and store two recycling boxes under it which I tip the poo tray into for a local smallholder.

I store my grain in galvanised dustbins.

thesockmonsterofdoom · 28/01/2009 11:13

Gewt one, they are very very fab. easy to clean, if you dont get round to cleaning for a few days they still come up sparkling with a quick hose down.
I have a cube and 6 chooks, wanting to get a couple more in the spring.
I love it, I love my chooks and all things chook related.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 28/01/2009 11:38

Thanks, 50cm should be high enough. Just need to sell my wooden hen house now!

hate to piss on the parade like, but i have found mites in my cube before now

but i think that may have occured after one of the hens went broody in the nest box and i left her there with some ebay eggs to hatch, none of which did, but during that time i couldnt really clean the cube...

re a place to keep hopper and food dry, i have an outdoor galvanised hopper, but also underneath the open cube run i have a feed thing hanging down and a leftover piece of corrugated roofing stuff sitting on top. works.

bronze · 28/01/2009 12:58

and theyve gone now...?
I've found with wooden housing if it gets mites I have to get rid. with the eglu and cube I can jetwash it and sprinkle it with a bit of antimite and its fine. I think thats a real bonus

Ratface · 28/01/2009 13:55

well i did jetwash and dust it, but they were still there... i moved them into a new shed and the cube was unoccupied for a few months, that cleared it. currently it lives out next to the shed and 2 of my 18 birds choose to sleep in it, and several of them lay in the nest box

i thought about getting the steam cleaner out to see if that would get rid of them... but in the end i was doing up the shed anyway, so i didnt bother.
