Extra feed for chickens in cold weather?

Do any of you put out extra feed or different type of feed when the weather is cold.
Mine are on layers pellets at the moment and some grain, but i keep thinking they need something to "fatten" them up a bit.
Also, do any of you get your chickens tested for disease as a regular thing or do you only take them to the vets when they are ill?
I give them regular doses of chicken parasite killer (granules). Is that enough?
Thanks.

Mine are totally free range and get a handful each of wheat/maize mix morning and evening.

They will also get all of the kitchen scraps soon, but at the moment they are being fed to this years cockerels who are in a run.

I have never/would never take one to the vets. If they are ill dh dispatches them.

I've yet to have a chicken that would eat layers pellets/mash or even commercial chick crumbs. They have always turned their noses beaks up at it .

mine areon layers, they are eating so much it is costing a fortune, think I need to let them free range more so they can eat my plants instead.

Mine are hardy warren types and have layers pellets in the morning and corn in the eveing as it is 'warming'I believe. They free range so get a load of slugs and things from the garden too.

I do sometimes boil up veg peelings and mash it up for them, but they don't seem that keen on that to be honest.

I went on a Poultry Keepers forum as I was worried about them in the winter but the consensus on there seemed to be they didn't really need anything extra in winter.

Mine are on layers pellets and they also free range.

I chuck in a tin of sweetcorn or a handful of grapes most evenings. They'll also have brocolli stalks and cauliflower leaves etc when we have them.

I did try giving them a dish of readybreak (warm) because people were talking about giving chickens porridge in the winter. They stood in the dish and the lot just spread over the floor. The next morning, it had all disappeared but whether it was the chickens that ate it or the local mouse population feasted on it, I don't know!

Ours are free range in an orchard and we give them kibbled maize in the cold weather. It has more fat in it than the wheat they otherwise get, so it's more calorific to keep them warmer. That's my logic anyway :) Ours won't touch layers pellets if they have the grain.

We have stopped the layers pellets and the hens are on a barley/oats/maize mix until February. They also get winter greens.

ours get porridge (warm), sweetcorn, cat food and poultry spice in their drink.

they're not spoilt!

On top of mash, greens and yoghurt mine are getting extra mixed corn and catfood.

Our's have layers pellets, with additional scraps. We also give them porridge when its really cold.

Ours had spagetti bolognese tonight and vegetable enchiladas last night (yes yes I know the no food from the kitchen rule but its cold and they like it!) Normally they are on layers pellets, free ranging 4 days a week and they get a handful of corn each evening.

I think the enchiladas worked since I had eggs this morning after 4 weeks of nothing!
