that a run of 195cm (76inches) x 55cm (21.5inches) is no where near big enough to house growing chicks/up to 4 silkie bantam girls because I'm hitting my head against a brick wall and this has been the source of lots and lots of family arguments this afternoon.

The plan is to make a run with a raised house (with a long low ramp v a shorter steeper one) so what size width do we need to aim for? The house will sit above the run essentially so the length is the full length they'll have when confined to the run, and for the same of family harmony I think its long enough? but its not wide enough for sure!

Below are pics of the run as it is currently

I have a 4ftx7ft run with a raised house over one end and I wouldn't want anything any smaller for 4 bantams.

So I'd say 4ft for the width.

Allow 1/2 square foot of floor space per chick to 3
weeks of age,

1 1/2 square feet to 14 weeks of age and

11/2-2 square feet per hen.

So 4 hens = 1.5 x 4 = 6 sq feet minimum.

(According to a site on the web!)

We have 2 runs, each for 3 hens - the run size is 9'x3', the house is an additional 3'x3'. Definitely no smaller. We did have 4 hens in the first run, and now there are 3 it is much much nicer for them!
