Funny coloured poo!

One of my chickens has got funny looking poo, it's runny and orangey coloured. They only arrived on friday so were confined to the run and only eating pellets for the first 3 days though they have been roaming the garden for the last couple of days.

They both seem fine, are eating well and don't have dirty bottoms. Is it anything to worry about?

Chickens will do the odd runny poo that is bright, light brown/orange. Its quite normal.

Thanks for the reply. I'm a bit concerned because it's all her poo, not just the odd one.

I've been onto the Omlet website and some people there recommend mixing live yoghurt with pinhead oatmeal for the chickens. I'm trying that his morning but they're not looking keen at the moment!

It could just be the move thats upset them a bit. Even changing to a different type of food, or richer grass could give them a bit of a dickly tummy for a week or so. I'm sure they'll be fine.

Fascinating chicken fact alert!!!!!

Apparently every few poos chickens do a "caecal poo". Basically this comes from a different part of the stomach and is those nasty dark smelly runny ones.

One of the poultry sites has a "chicken poo gallery" so you can compare chicken poos to see what's normal...might be poultrychat.com. Funnily enough I didn't bookmark it

Well, the yoghurt/oatmeal mix went down like a lead balloon, they just made this face . Hopefully it'll settle down soon. Now, do I dare look at the chicken poo gallery??

If it looks like caramel then it's definitely a caecal poo. No need to worry.

ProfYaffle · 21/06/2008 14:29

Yes it does look like caramel, hadn't thought of that comparison before, won't be eating caramel any time soon - ick.

Glad it's nothing to worry about though, even if it is a pita to clear up.

Oh, that's reassuring to know about the caecal poo. I've noticed it occasionally and thought the bird was a bit off-colour.
