My mum took us round to a friends of hers house to meet their chickens this afternoon, the girls loved them, I was amazed how little space they actually need, they gave us some eggs which the girls got from the coop and we have just had them for tea, they were the nicest thing I have ever eaten. I am currently looking at the eglu thingy, what are the alternatives, I don't like the look of the run with no height to them.

Do you mean the roof of the run run was covered with solid material?

If so thats good - yes because if bird flu ever gets a grip on this country then defra will order all birds to be kept under cover and a roofed run would pass the standard.

Also you could put some of the easibed stuff in the run if you wanted and it wouldn't get wet in the rain.

yes, it is kind of like a shed with 1 fully mesh side and the house bit is at the top of the back so they can run under it as well as around it, it actually looks really nice, I think I only liked the other ones because of the cute hearts but once my chooks are in there they will be lovely anayway, looking at the eglu again with dh and decided that it looks like a little tykes house for chickens and that the chickens would probably prefer wood.
What is easibed?
Omg I am so excited, dh said that there is no way he could have guessed what I was going to ask him for.

Yes, a roof is good, as long as it isn't felted, as that can harbour redmite.

Easibed is what I use on the floor - it's kind of like wood chippings, but absorbs moisture better and is great for them scratching around in.

Mine don't seem to bat an eyelid at bonfire night!

I would get a mixture of egg colours if you can - if you're after 4, you could get a White Star (white eggs), Black Rock (cream/tinted eggs), Ranger (brown eggs) and Speckeldy (dark brown).

This is the sort of design I want to do for our 'mark 2' run!

www.woodenart.org.uk/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=36 this one looks like the same sort of thing as the one they have.
