We have just moved to our dream house and we knew that our neighbours had chickens. We have found since lots of sleepless nights they also have 2 cockerels. They do not put them in a coop overnight and they appear to favour our back fence as their place to begin cockadoodledoing from 2 in the morning.

Would there be a reason for them doing this? How can I tactfully ask for something to be done would you as chicken keepers be really peeved if someone complained about the noise. We obviously dont want to rock the boat but need to do something.

We have two newish roosters, one lives in the front garden and on in the back. I never heard our old rooster (unless I was up bf ds4 and then I used to hear him at about 4am).

The new ones crow to each other from 3.30am onwards. I have just stopped noticing so I reckon you will get used to it.

Bummer though, disturbed sleep. Hope it works out ok,

its a hard one, i live in a country village and when some of my birds turned out to be cockerels i rehomed them. we do however have some near us that crow but you do get used to the noise.

what i would do in your situation is to befriend the neighbours and over a nice cup of tea one day say about the noise. they might be really lovely people but might be really upset if you go storming in and complain and you could never be friends. its good to keep them on your side, if you ever go for planning permission, problems over boundaries, watching for burglers or problems with other residents etc.

you might come to a solution together.

you should get some chooks as well now you are in the countryside, they are great pets and having your own supply of eggs is great. they dont take much looking after and are really cheap to feed.
take care about feeding foxes though they can be dangerous if you have small children and they do make your garden really smell (and i mean really bad!!!!) before i had chooks i had one in my city centre garden and i thought it was cute until the smell.

good luck
